General Advice for a new guy

Hi
Bought the game and trying things out but I have no idea what I an doing.
Do I go for size and merge my units or run several small forces?
How important is each troop type? Cav? Inf? Art? Combined arms?
Any siege advice?
Any suggestions at all?
Oh, even though I dont know what I am doing it loks great.
