Major Winters is gone.

Back around 1950-52, my dad was stationed at Indiantown Gap Military Reservation. We lived at Palmyra Pa, near Hershey..
Dad was a Captain at the time and was often bringing fellow officers home to meet the family.
One of those officers was Maj Richard Winters.

I was not old enough to be able to tell you much about the man, he was kind to my brother and I, but the way my father treated him was very distinctly different than the way he treated other officers, and even as young as I was I understood the difference.

Dad had an incredible military history himself, starting his combat on the same day as the Major, but dad was with the 116th RCT at Omaha Beach, soon after Winters' unit flew over, so it was rare that he ever gave anyone any sort of "preferance" over his other friends.

Of course in more recent years we have all learned the history of Maj Winters and the men of his unit, and I understand why dad felt the way he did about Maj Winters.

Today, I learned of his recent death in Palmyra Pa. of Parkinsons' Disease..

I pray for his family, and thank God the Major lived when he did.
