Dear Guys,
New to game. I'd like to highlight, underline, etc. the pdf text and add my own bookmarks, but I don't know how. Does this pdf allow such? If not, what are some good ways to refind important info I want to recall?
Thanks in advance,
Mike

Yes, the pdf isn't locked so you can fully edit it, provided you've got Adobe Acrobat.

(However, this might be considered copyright violation, I don't know...)

All I really want to do is highlight and underline so I can find things. Also make my own bookmarks. I do not have Adobe Acrobat; only Reader. Under toolbars - customize - comment and markup toolbar it says you can only access when document rights are enabled.
How do I do that? If enabled, there are checkboxes for highlights, underlining, etc.
How do I set new bookmarks in the pdf?
Thanks,
Mike

One thing you can do with the Reader is add "Sticky Notes". In version 10 there is an icon on the toolbar towards the right that looks like a little cartoon dialog baloon. You can make notes and save them on the page. When you pass your cursor over the sticky note the text in your note will appear. It's not quite a book mark, but it's easy to do.

Otherwise, to actually edit the document itself without the Adobe editor, I believe you would have to convert it to a file format that your doc editor can work with. I've played around with OpenOffice and it's PDF plug in just a little ( it's free ). Searching the manual is much easier.

I have Reader 8, and it says no updates available. Does that mean I can't use Reader 10 since I have WinXP?
Thanks,
Mike

In order to use R10, you first need to uninstall R8, and then install R10.

But you could probably install R10 without having to unistall R8, I think...

Updates are only for the same version. What you need is an upgrade.

I'm not sure. Adobe Reader has always updated for me without a problem. Version 8 is going back a bit. I havent used XP in a while, I'm currently stuck with Vista ( it came pre-installed ). Version 9 used to work just fine though. Check the system requirements on the Adobe website. Maybe you can't jump straight to v.10 from .v.8. Strange though, Adobe usually let's me know when updates are available. It's one of the few things I let update semi-automatically.

Thanks for the help.
Installed Adobe Reader 10, and it has a highlighter and the sticky note feature.
This should help me annotate the manual fine.

For PDF to ebook conversion you could try this. I haven't tried it myself, just heard about from various people.

Mike,

Foxit Reader/Editor has the option to bookmark etc and to display/save a .pdf as .txt or ebook.

Dear Klink,
The free version of foxit leaves a watermark on all saved pages that were altered.
Acrobat Reader lets you highlight, but it leaves a popup window attached.
Any better free pdf editor?
Mike
