I looked in the rules but perhaps I missed the answer. In combat, does cavalry fall under mech or infantry leader abilities?
Thanks.

My soviet cav have tanks,

So I guess both mech and inf ratings apply.

And they are able to follow up behind the armoured spearheads. Soviet cavalry units are a real PITA if they achieve a breaktrough. Axis get less units but they have several Romanian Cavalry divisions (6 I think) which together with their mountain corps are the best units they have.

This recent battle of mine would suggest that cavalry use infantry modifiers in combat. This would make sense because in wwii cavalry didn't go into battle on horseback.Don't know about leadership modifiers.
Can anyone tell me what terrain modifiers motorized infantry use?I've been assuming they use infantry.

Also I'm wondering why rough terrain (hills) has a +3 modifier the same as mountains.I would have thought +2 like heavy woods, city and swamps would have been more realistic.

Any cavalry or motorized units (including motorized infantry) use mechanized modifiers.

Not sure what the designer rationale was, but as I see it swamps and woods are mostly difficult to move through and have limited engagement ranges, they don't offer much intrinsic protection. Rough hexes, with solid ground, valleys, ditches and reverse slopes offer more protection. You also have to go up and down hill all the time, which greatly increases the difficulty of the attacker. The best example of the effectiveness of rough terrain is the Italian campaign.

So it's mechanized modifiers for movement and infantry modifiers for combat? So maybe you ideally have a leader who has good modifiers for both?

Mechanized modifiers for combat. Combat skills don't have an effect on movement.

Mechanized modifiers for combat.
Are you sure this is true?Look at the defensive cv for the cavalry div just prior to the above battle. It's exactly what you'd expect for an infantry unit, a bit higher if anything.A mech unit in that hex would have a cv of about 2 I would expect.

I think I've worked it out now.Cavalry squads are listed in the manual apendix as non afv types as are motorized and mechanized infantry squads. There's a list on pages 309 and 310.Still not certain about the leadership modifier catagory though, I've no doubt it's in the manual somewhere.

Are you sure this is true?

I thought they used infantry too, but the developers told me they use mechanized, so I trust their word.

Hmm, I want to test this out and see. I could swear I've seen cavalry using what seems like infantry bonuses for CV terrain calcs. They seem to go up in swamp/rough terrain, whereas armor/motorised always goes down.

As a guess, I'd say that's because they don't actually have many ground elements that are motorized, mechanized or armoured, so the CV's of their ground elements is not affected as much as those of, say, a Tank or Panzer division.

OK, this is starting to bug me now.Just for the sake of argument I drove some armoured and motorized units into different types of terrain.Pay particular attention to the panzer divisions in the rough terrain and the swamp. Now either the defensive cv on the counter is misleading or in fact armoured divisions defend difficult terrain just as well as infantry divisions. It's also possible that there's something going on here that I don't understand,(that's usually the reason).[:D]
Can anyone shed any light on this?

The counters currently don't display the actual terrain effects on CV's, well, not always in any case, but will just take the raw value of the terrain without modifiers it seems. Those Panzer divisions won't defend up to their counter's CV worth because the engagement distances will be lower and their CV's will be reduced in combat.

Brilliant.Thanks for that.
So just ignore what it says on the counter and use your best judgement I suppose.
Would be nice if the counter could give you a rough idea at least.
