After playing the 1941 campaign vs Axis on normal and managing to stop the attack even before the mud I decided to fire up a challenging game in preparation of a PBEM I am planning to do with Arnhem.

As you can see the AI managed to push all towards Moscow in just six turns. North is being pressed hard and the Southwestern front is facing extermination after a fighting withdrawal to the east. With two more months of clear weather I feel I am in trouble here...

The AI is able to pull of huge encirclements and managed to put quite a good grip on the encircled troops (unabling me to break out).

What would you do;

It doesn't look that bad. That's about what  human player does in PBEM. Leningrad is in ok shape, but I can't see Moscow on your screenshot so can't tell what's going on there.

You should be able to see it on the second screenshot. Leningrad seems ok because I just refused the line up north but my rifle divisions are like medieval peasants trying to fight armoured knights..... I am trying to back slowly into the marshes and hills in the north but there is not much protection in the centre and south...

What would you do;

I would watch the AI play itself and observe how the Soviet AI stops the Germans cold.

See suggestions for PBEM defence of Moscow in another thread. I try to apply the same principles in AI and PBEM games. I don't see much digging in front of Moscow and Leningrad has some gaps that I would try to exploit as Axis in PBEM.

Ah yeah the Soviets are like peasants v knights in 1941. It's terribly discouraging. In one game I thought things were going well for the Soviets, falling back in good order, giving Germans a bloody nose. I opened turn 10 to find 24 divisions pocketed by a ridiculous panzer lunge. The panzers can do things you'd never expect.

Thanks for the suggestions. I used the Moscow militia to fill a hole and strengthen the "western front" HQ. I think I should have used them to prepare defenses instead. Better to make that mistake against the AI. BigA, what were you seeing in Leningrad? The Novgorod opening by Northwestern front?

The river line to the east of the leningrad city hexes protects the port that receives supply. It is the shortest route to isolate the city compared to going for the "Right Hook" ports on the east bank of the lake. It was my favourite route against the AI, and I managed it in one PBEM game. I start diggers on both sides of the river from T3.
