Need guidance.

I want my ships to go farther and faster. So what techs allow me to do this? As a human?
So I am researching hyper drives (does this allow me to jump farther?)
I am researching energy such as fusion (does this allow me to have better power plants?)
Do I need other stuff like life support and or cargo fuel tanks, I dont know what they are called. If I need them please tell me what they are called.
As an example I am planning a war with some bugs. I feel that the galaxy should be a homo-sapiens only club, so I want to have my fleets ready to attack when the time is right. However I want to jump from my closest planet and be able to take the next one in.
So I need to research troops I think but more importantly I want farther jumps, I think. Any advice?
Thanks!

larsenex ; a quick reply... I will go and write one, off line, that is more detailed.
- Add fuel cells to extend the range of your ship. This will also increase mass, and slow the ships top speeds and reduce acceleration. Adding thrusters MAY help. Play with adding lots of thruster, note the trade off between more thrust, and the added mass of each thruster! and then reducing, while watching the acceleration number, more is NOT always better.
- Go to tech window, and look at the various techs for hyper-drives, fusion tech, and sub-light engine development. EXAMINE each tech. Some **may auto update ** currently used installed components (has red up arrow in tech box). This means all components in the field are automatically update. NO refits needed.
- Examine the thruster tech tree... see how the various thruster possibilities have different speeds, ** fuel consumption,** etc. Many trade offs here. basic trade offs. faster thrust vs, more efficient fuel usage (better Miles per gallon)
- Jump engines, same thing, AND one branch is for quicker jump time (going to warp).
- Look at the fission / fusion power sources (the reactor/component that changes fuel, Caslon/hydrogen, to energy) to power your ship and run the engines. Fusion reactors have less mass, so just upgrading will improve your ship. Trade off, similar to Fission based engines. Some faster, so,me more fuel efficient.
- You really need to examine the components in the tech tree, and understand how they relate to the kind of ship performance you will get. No easy answers here, sorry. But, when you are done, you will KNOW what all the trade-offs are, and be able to fine tune your fleet doctrines with your designer specs. This is a fun part, for me, of the game.

totally agree....with every word....totally

BTW, Lar.. I just learned, yesterday, a new aspect of ship design.... and my current game is going much better that any before....
as you design a ship, watch the upper right hand panel, (ship speed). As you add mass to the ship, the maximum speed at warp drops. I had been playing with all my ships at 1/2 to 2/3 max speed. Now I add an extra reactor to most ships, based on what occurs in that max speed window...

yap, that is the first step when designing your ships.....by default, they are all underpowered

Plus, if you mean it (homo sapiens only) you need bombs, not troops [:-], otherwise the bugs will be spreading UNDER YOUR PROTECTION after you conquered them, that is.

You mean if you conquer ALL the bugs, (keep them happy on your colonies, etc.) they will still 'somehow' rise against you, as a set part of the story line?

Don´t think so, but then I have never yet played far into the Shakturi storyline.
Might be worth a hint to Rutins and crew though [X(].
