BASIC Proximity Sensor - What does it do?

Post by gargoil »

I understand later techs let you scan cargo and components of other empires ships. But what exactly is the difference between a ship with no sensor and one equipped with the BASIC PROXIMITY SENSOR?

+1 !!
While the battles the British fight may differ in the widest possible ways, they invariably have two common characteristics – they are always fought uphill and always at the junction of two or more map sheets.

from the pedia

"Note that you can always see ships or bases that are in the same system as you."

so it's useful outside the star systems when an LRS would be to large to put on a ship

Ah... I remember sending a small group of ships after a pirate that was outside one of my systems. They would always go to where he was, not where he ended up. I guess a Proximity Sensor was what I needed.

Isnt the basic proximity sensor just a fancy way of saying we have windows built in our command center so our captains can see whats out there nearby?

LOL....

ya, the pedia also mentions they are good for plotting the course of ships that jump away
never tested this but since you observed this behavior i'd be curious to know if you see an improvment after using them

Not actually sure what that even means in game terms, "plotting the course of ships that jump away"

Does it mean you can guess the destination of these ships, or see them longer past your regular sensor range?

I have not had an opportunity to verify that the Basic Proximity Sensor provides ships with a target lock on ships outside of systems. Next time I see an emeny passing by a system that I can reach, I will attempt to engage with a ship with the sensor. If it pursues instead of just jumping to the spot the emeny was when the order was given, then I will consider it confirmed that these sensors indeed do work as advertised.

The Basic proximity sensor will give a small chance of detecting enemy fleet trajectories as they attack your bases/planets.

So if your ships have them, any enemy fleets on their way to attack your base/plaent in 'proximity sensor' range of your ship may be detected.

This shows up with an arrow showing where they are going allowing you to attempt to intercept them before they get there.

Improved versions of the sensor up the chance as well as do other things.

Ideally you would have a long range sensor AND a proximity sensor on all your bases. A long range sensor allows you to see them, but not determine where they are going.

interesting point, i always assumed that LRS can do that as well. Checked on the pedia and it says indeed this

"Long Range Scanners operate in a similar manner to Proximity Arrays, but with much longer range."

i guess similar is not exact.....great info, tornnight

From my observation:
when you place your ships near sun with orders "attack system targets" - ships with proximity sensor can attack enemy that hyper-out near one of your colonies, if they in range. If they are not in range or not equip with sensor - they sit where they are, and you must order attack manually.

select your ship and hover mouse where you want send. note that coor. numbers in a left corner.
Image

7971k : 11374k - just near the sun.

Basic prox. sensor have a range 15000 (or 15k) so, hover your mouse left/right up/down and watch numbers change, little calculation and you will know what your ships can actually see on their radar.
