Routine Convoys

I have just (re-)started playing Pacific War and had a couple newbie-ish questions that I can't remember the answers to WRT Routine Convoys.

1) Since DDs need to be in LA, Calcutta or Nagoya, does it help in any way to station AKs and TKs in those ports?

2) I have been trying to leave AKs and TKs in various ports. Is it preferable to have a few large multi-ship groups or many smaller groups? (or does it matter?)

3) Is there any way of influencing the destinations of RCs? Are they more likely to go to HQ locations?

4) Are RCs only run to destinations with ships from the same HQ? (e.g. Would AKs from ANZAC be used to resupply a base from SW Pacific?)

Thanks for any help you guys can give me!

These are based on my own observations playing the game -- I can't confirm them from the program source code.

1) Yes, definitely. Generous numbers of MCS and TK vessels. Note that when RC's are attacked by subs, the damaged ships will show up in the "home ports". Therefore, you want some stacks of undamaged ships there too.

2)I find that it seems to help if the HQ ports, like Pearl Harbor for the Central Pacific, have cargo ships. For the other ports, it is far more useful to load the ships "manually" and send them to where the supplies are needed.

3)Another definite yes. The HQ ports seem to get the lion's share of supplies. If you want supply priorty for a base but don't want to move your HQ there, make that base the objective of the nearest HQ.

4)RC's from Japan seem to go anywhere, depending on the priority of the HQ requesting supplies. Allied supplies for Burma, India and Malaya seem to come from Calcutta, and the remainder from L.A.

I seem to recall from the old PacWar list, too, that new RC's are created from ships in the pool. This means that if you have 5 20+ groups in the "home port", and none in the pool, you'll only have 5 RC's. If you send all but one of the ships per group to the pool, though, it'll create as many RC's as it can.

My experiences seem to bear this out. I periodically just go to the ports and run 'em down.

Hi IntellWeenie !
Few tips from my practice with RCS :
- Any spare MCS should be based in Nagoya / LA.
- If You want to relocate them there simply and quickly press ALT-T (get transport) while pointing at them (if nothing happens - You must create TF's manually and send them to right bases).
- If You want to cut enemy base from RCS just attack it with CV's or bombard (even with small forces) from time to time.
- It doesn't matter how many ships are displayed in multi-ship units (MCS) in supply port. Computer will anyway add or withdraw them from/to pool (if possible).
- It's good for Japs to place all PC's and DE's in Nagoya. They're useless elsewhere.
- Don't worry 'bout Your fuel reserve - as You'll see - zero level doesn't collide with swimming from LA to Calcutta !
- Remeber to place H6K and H8K seaplanes for cover over Java Sea and Philipines.
- To incerase amount of supplies delivered by RoutineConvoySystem to a base - place a HQ there and as many troops as possible.

Good luck !

Slow pc's and De's in routine convoys are quite easily torbedoed by a submarine. They can also be used as escorts to transport and merchant fleets.
Put most of your DD's in routine convoy ASW.

Bet your convoys will work better now! :)

It's an oddity of sorts that *some* new MCS will show up in SF or Seattle.

Mmmm...maybe in a future version ALL the new MCS will show up in LA. It may be a bit ahistorical, but it makes the player's life a bit easier, and would help the AI, too.

Lot of usefull info on this thread. I'll try 10 or so AKA groups in Nagoya plus a few in HQ bases, and the same again with TK's. Then pare them down so there is a fair few in pool.

PS. Also i have found that moving HQ's to new bases does indeed reduce the number of SS intercepts for about 6 weeks or so. Just moving
the 14Army HQ from Manilla to Jolo did so.
