I ran up against the wall in front of Moscow, and said "hey lets probe in echelon". I was surprised with the north, so I hasty attacked through in the south, and voila, I was shocked.

Sorry, Turn 15 in my Third attempt at a "take Moscow" strategy". Leningrad was taken this turn as well, but not very prettily.

You start enough games as Germans VS AI on normal you will realize that by the start of the blizzard you're front line is stretched from Rostov - Voronezh - Ryazan - then wrapping around moscow 6-8 hexes east and then up to the eastern most finnish border. (and only sevastopol holds out on the crimea peninsula)
5 mil + russians gone.
And then the blizzard and you realize all that advancing didn't seem to do much
My AI feelgood

Playing Normal AI, going all out - it is possible to do some really remarkable "bursts of speed" as the Germans. Across the Dnepr on turn 3, turn 5 rested and air-supplied panzers encircle Smolensk, turn 7 or 8 (if needed use HQ buildup) and pull off Bryansk-Vyazma two months early. Moscow can be surrounded early...but this is against the AI, NOT a human.
I still think it is useful, to learn this way so that the intricacies the Germans need to take enough land, kill enough men, and decimate enough of the economy to survive against a human. I used to have a pic of my game where I had panzers around Moscow in August, fun but more of a learning tool than a real test. Against challenging I have not faired nearly as well. My goal has been to learn the system and the capabilities, I am slowly doing this...

If you hit the Soviet AI hard enough you should be able to keep your front as far east as your railheads allow.
In my current AAR I had my front from Leningrad-Kalinin-Moscow-Voronezh-Voroshilovgrad-Rostov and was only forced to give up Voronezh which was taken back fairly quickly after the blizzards have ended.
With some less mistakes with rail repairs than I did I think it might be possible to hold all of the frontline, but I think you need to have decimated by Red Army by 5+ million men.
