I am looking to buy a good introductory turn based war game from Matrix Games. I have tried RTS games, but my preference is the turn based game. Suggestions?

Thank you
Fred

Need to be some more specific. Strategic, operational or tactical and what difficulty level?

There is some free, yet good stuff available. Google for Panzer General Forever or have a look at Shrapnel for Steel Panthers WW2. Can't really tell about Matrix titles, as I'm not so much into introductory games, but Battlefield Academy or Decisive Campaigns: Warsaw to Paris might be your cup of tea. The latter one is not tactical though.

Panzer General Forever is most likely the best. Just do a quick Google search and a download link will be available.

FREE game as well.

Battlefield Academy on this site is good for beginners and "Panzer Corps" will be released soon enough for another entry level game that is looking to be spectacular.

Introductory, tactical

Easy answer

Battlefield Academy

Slightly longer answer if you prefer ancients to WW2

Tin Soldiers - either Caesar or Alexander whichever takes your fancy

Field of Glory

Tin Soldiers Alexander I found pretty hard. Good game though the graphics were very bare bones. I would suggest Wacht am Rhein, what is that series called? Close Combat? That one is definitely tactical, WWII, reasonable interface, relatively up-to-date graphics, good strategy element, fairly challenging but can be figured out.

Another option are the Western Civ Soft games: Forge of Freedom and Crown of Glory Emperor's Edition. Those games include both strategic and tactical elements. Maybe not 'introductory' but you can get up to speed.

War in the Pacficic is most definitely NOT introductory. I don't know War in the East, but my understanding is that it too is exceptionally complicated.

Did you miss the 4 smilies in 2ndACR's post?

Blah, I learned to swim by getting thrown into the deep end of the pool. Might as well start him off right.

Deep end of the pool is one thing. You're talking about throwing him into well chummed water teeming with ravenous sharks and barracudas! [:D]

I like the question and that is why I am here today.
I do not wish an introductory game but...
I remember the fun I had with the old SSI computer wargmes (Kursk, Gettysburg, Battle of the Bulge).
I do not wish to get into an argument/discussion if those are Operational or Strategic or Tactical because my Army buddy lectured me just last week on the difference and this old Sailor still doesn't get it.
Suffice it to say, I am looking for something like the old Avalon Hill Battle of the Bulge type games (divisions are broken down into three or four units (counters).

Any suggestions?
thanks

Introductory, tactical

I think Battlefield Academy is your best bet. There are a lot of other games that could work too, but I would start with that.

Many of our games would work well for you. Of the most recent releases, take a look at Decisive Campaigns: The Blitzkrieg and War in the East. The Operational Art of War III and Kharkov: Disaster on the Donets (and the Across the Dnepr Expansion) are great choices too, and many more. [8D]

Welcome Severn, I'd say to take your time and do research for the game purchase as different games appeal to different folks, don't be afraid to dive into a game that some would consider  intermeadiate or advanced if the forum for the title is seeing a lot of action. Many in the community here are willing to help with tips and issues especially if you are willing to help yourself by reading the manual, the more you know about a game the more enjoyable your game play will be.

Best of luck. [:)]

I know this is a joke but it's a well populated forum page and you would always be able to get answers quick.
