GC (V1.03 Beta 3 patch) Bwheatley sov vs Abulbulian Axis (Ara no cheating/peek..) Take 2!

Well we got our new beta patch that should make the game a little more win able for a well played axis player.
Ara should be posting an AAR too.

Though i think it's going to be hard for me since i'm typically bad at the offensive side of the coin.

I don't know if my initial turn is good or bad. I'm sure area will isolate some of my panzer's but it can't be helped we have objectives to meet.

Posting some initial screen shots in the next post.

**EDIT: This thread is now going to follow our 2nd game where i am again the soviets. we're scraping the game in the first few posts due to the inability to roll back when there are major major bugs. (like 6th army surrendering)

Here we have everything after movement on T1. This is my northern planning map. As you can see i don't really want to take leningrad. In my game as the soviets i realized it's a liability for the axis since it stretches the front. If i can i'd enjoy isolating it but if not that's fine too.

I want smolensk. After i take it i'll push a little closer to moscow just to have some fall back room.

I want my main focus to be on getting to kiev & kharkov though. I need to take those cities so that I can help cripple soviet manpower.

Here is out southern plan. I want to get the crimea so i'll have to be fast. I want to get over kerch and fortify kuban and get some mountain troops there to hold during the blizzard. I feel it will be a great jumping off point for the '42 offensive.

I want stalion and rostov as well.

As we know no plan survives first contact so this could all be out the window quickly.

In the north i'm on the gates of riga. I also made sure to capture all the ports on the west coast of the baltic so the soviets can't take a water taxi home.

I encirlced 10th army plus some so that should be a good first bite.
I've got a mini pocket north of minsk. I could have taken minsk but i'd rather pocket units. Without the soviets being able to move factories on T1 the minsk factories will surely fall.

The big new Axis-friendly patch is out? Did I miss something?

In the south -

I opened up a link to the Romanians so they will come online next turn. I'm curious if the game is balanced so that the germans SHOULD always do this or if it was balanced assuming the germans wouldn't do this? Any testers care to chime in?

Blah as usual my roomie chesty puller is going to get on and try to help ara beat me as usual.

Ok so i am pretty confident the russians will relink and cut some of my tanks off. How do i know? because this opening move is almost exactly what ara did and i gave him hell. Though in the end all the soviet units did die. :) So i'm confident i can pull the same thing off at least.

My least favorite thing about the Romanians besides them fighting like garbage is they are so slow :'(.
I'm thinking once i can take pskov i will transfer the panzer corp assigned to AGN down to the south. I can really use tank speed there. If i can't move quickly enough the crimea will be locked down tighter then a nun on a date.

I found it on a road side. Did find a bug in it too :)
But i wasn't going to play axis until things got a little more evened out. I'm still going to get smacked in the winter though but at least 42 the russians won't have 60 corps so quickly either.

Just how "friendly" is this patch then?

On the AAR, seems a fairly typical Axis start

No, I don't think it is out yet.

But it will correct some things and make life a little easier for the Germans.

Patch makes it a little more costly for russians to build corps in 42. It gives you some more flexibility in what type places your groups can be a part of. Along with double cost of factory movement + no factory moves on the first turn.

Should be fun.

Glad my opening move is standard. I wasn't sure if the game was balanced for an opening move that did not wake up the minors early.

The one lame thing about a server game is i can't login to my turn to look around at my units etc.
So i can't remember numbers off the top of my head but i'm concerned about whether i should take the AGN's tanks as well as 1 corp from AGC to move to AGS. Or should i only steal  from AGN to give to AGS.

I don't want to screw my drive on smolensk over too much. I'd like to have enough of a buffer in front of smolensk so that i don't lose it come blitz time.

Also since this patch doesn't address the blizzard at all i can't think of any reason why i should try to just dig in and handle the soviet winter attack since it won't help. I'm thinking i'll go balls to the wall. Then also about T10 start building fortified hexes so that they have time to fort up. Then i will have a place for my boys to fall back to.

We'll see if abulbulian's knowledge on the Eastern Front is usable in a game. [;)]

It isn't out yet. I'm guessing this AAR is an open test.

Heh i've toyed with the idea of sending him the youtube clip of hitler screaming about whatever is dubbed over the real lines. And telling him that's how he gets when he let's himself get all fired up about stuff. And i also tell him he would make more friends not calling people who disagree with him stupid. :)
It's the little things.

He's actually a really nice guy when you don't get his ire up with things he thinks are non-sense. We were actually jointly working on an AT (advanced tactics) scen. I had the world at war map all nicely done up with regional weather which i thought was great. But he just griped too much so it really caused me to burn out on AT. When AT Gold comes out i'll hopefully have fun finishing that as well as redoing the GPW scenario i took over.

I haven't seen people able to get Leningrad vs a human, so isolating seems to be the best practical goal.  I'm wondering how feasible it is if a human sends a lot of AGC to help AGN to grab the place.

Generally it seems people are trying to push towards both Leningrad and Moscow with the expectation neither will be taken before rain, which sounds like a half goal.  Why not heavily shift forces from one AG to grab one of the locations?  The other AG can still make decent ground considering how bad the Soviet Army is for 1941.

Don't like that AGS move. A human will eat that up as you know. I still prefer to just cut the rail line south of Tarnopol so the Sovs can't rail out most of Southwest Front. They'll still move a bunch out to the south, but those can be isolated in a turn or two.

For what it is worth on my 2 cents on the AGN panzers. I would leave them attached to AGN for command purposes and attach a AGC infantry corps or AGC panzer corps (from PG3) to them to help relieve the pressure on AGC's command overload. PG4 can operate in conjunction with PG3 if you are looking to drive in the middle or you can basically do a bit of a shift to the south with PG3 taking the place of PG2 and PG2 moving further south to help AGS.

I agree with Mynok that the AGS opening is weak. Every single unit will be back in supply when the security regiment along the Rumanian border moves back. The other issue is the corridor is too narrow. You will likely be coming to the rescue of those panzers, but part of it depends on what your opponent does too. Eventually, you may be able to kill all those units, but it is going to take a lot of extra time and there won't be a very big push towards Kiev while it is going on.

Well in my soviet game leningrad was taken. But the finns really are not all they are cracked up to be. There morale by spring 42 is in the toilet when they are in soviet territory and they are a liability. I would rather keep the front short in the north and save troops for the south.
