Last turn, i made a lot of fighter sweeps on the British airfields in BOB, destroying and damaging quite a lot of aircraft on the ground. I noted in the end turn reports that the Brits had suffered substantially more pilot casualties than they lost aircraft in flight. Is this fog of war, or pilots being killed on the ground when their airfields are attacked?

Yes,
pilots can be killed on the ground!
The pilots seem to stay by their A/C most of the time.......you hit the A/C on ground than there is a high chance that you wounded or killed an enemy pilot.
