So um...........hey you guys: you know how you can transport stuff on a train, how you embark it, move it, disembark it and it moves on the rails? How about something like that for moving vehicles? Like a tank transporter. You'd be able to save on supply expenditure for that tank unit ( or whatever you're moving ) and it would move like a train but would stay on roads. Just a stray idea I came up with last night about 02:30
Anybody want to comment on this unit?

Now that's quite an intruiging idea and probably more realistic to implement than turning TOAW into 'Harpoon' or 'Hunt the Bismarck' *snickers*
Two ways I can think of to design it:
a) A tank unit get's special vehicles in it's OOB that allows the tanks to be transported on those vehicles. A simple flag, like rail, sea, air movement on the unit window *upper right* will enable it; alternatively another drop-down/right click menu with the option 'transport mode' *see Panzer Campaigns where there is a 'T'mode for units* Units in transport mode of course suffer penalties in case they get attacked
b) A special unit icon and transport equipment that does it; similar to what I described above. E.g. You move your Armored unit onto the transport unit and click the option transpoirt.
HOWEVER - in theory and considering the doctrine and past engagements, as well as the scale, I would limit it to the a unit size of an armoured battalion, MAX a unit the size of a Rgt/TF...
Just my 2 Reichspfennigs...

There's no "train" unit so I'm thinking either we introduce a new tank transporter unit ( via the equipment editor or something similar ) or Ralph could just abstract the tank transporter "unit" like the trains except it never leaves the road net. Personally I kinda like the new tank transporter unit but then there would be the need to move the two units as a group somehow and the "abstract" tank transporter unit might be faster and easier to program for Ralph. Just a thought. And I like your idea of limiting the size of units transported....maybe we could limit it according to the unit's weight or something.

Oh, Uncle Larry... I got another idea... option c) like a sea / rail/ air transport value, we use a tank/armoured unit transport value which allows armoured units to be emabrked and transported using the road network; naturally, only the primary roads, or a movement penalty if one uses secondary roads. What about that? That's easier to program and to code, no?
*edit*
Just read your post again and noticed the 'train' unit idea, which is what I just tried to suggest. I think it's the easiest solution. I'd call it 'strategic' movement or similar.

Actually, wikipedia says that this transporter vehicle has off-road capability but I like the idea of a penalty for off-primary-roads.

Good idea.......I like that.

We're saving it to surprise him on his birthday. Actually I don't think anybody has broached the subject with him about it. I'm wondering what he would have to say about it actually. I delagate YOU to ask him about it. LOL.

Yeah, Right!
I was more in the mind to ask 'what does Ralph say to the CODING of this'..........
Looks resonable at first, but I've no idea what it would run into in the code, eh?

I agree that the coding of this could be opening a can of worms. Although, the code is in there already for trains so maybe it's a case of slightly modifying a cut and paste job?

By all meter's, we'll be doing this 'OFFLINE' , eh?
Look for me at your offline measure.....................

If you add enough trucks to a tank unit it can be upgraded from, say, Slow Motorized to Fast Motorized. I had always rationalized that by assuming just this sort of equipment. I assumed the trucks were carrying the tanks when behind the lines.

Hey.........that's a great idea. Thanks.
