Different secondary missions for CV air groups

Hi, in an AAR I posted the following which started as a prescription but ended as a question:
Whenever you have a CV carrying both DBs and TBs, and you set the DBs on a secondary mission (port, AF, ground strike) but do not want the TBs to get involved but keep on standby for naval strike also in the pm phase, you need to MANUALLY set them for "rest" as secondary mission. Now that I come to think of it (haven't done much invading where opposing navy has been present since I learnt this) I'm not sure if this means that they literaly "rest" and NOT conduct navstrikes in the pm phase... Maybe someone else can chip in on that? Surely there is some way to get the TBs to be set on "keep a lookout for enemy ships and hit them with torps whenever spotted and do nothing else regardless of what the chaps in the Dauntlesses may be doing over the jungle including after the lunch break"?
Anyone knows the answer to this?
Cheers,
M

A bomber unit which is given naval attack as it's primary mission, will attempt to fly that mission in both the AM and PM phases. Whether it actually does fly the mission depends on various factors such as weather, distance to target, target identification etc.
The option to have a secondary mission assigned is only available if the primary mission is naval attack. The secondary mission will only be flown if the primary mission is not possible but the secondary mission is. This is why secondary missions are only ever flown in the PM phase, after there is no possibility of the primary mission being flown.
Therefore in the specific question raised by the OP, the TB group with "Rest" assigned as its secondary mission will:
1. Try to fly a naval attack mission in the AM phase if possible.
2. Try to fly a naval attack mission in the PM phase if possible (this includes whether the AM strike was close enough to the CV to allow recovery of the group and relaunching the same group against the same enemy TF)
3. If neither (1) or (2) occurred, it will "rest" and not launch against any other targets of opportunity.

There may be some confusion when a group is flying a combat mission and has a training % also.
This applies to the current beta patch 6, but I believe it appies to earlier ones too.
-------------------------------
When the group has a primary mission of TRAINING, the secondary mission is used to indicate what skill to train in.
When you switch it to a combat mission, the secondary mission is still used to determine the skill to train in.
I suspect that this has been happening since I allowed specific skill training.
To get the group to train in the current mission, you could either change the secondary mission to the new skill while the primary is in TRAINING.
Or change the primary mission to TRAINING (and the secondary gets set to the previous primary mission by default), and back to the new mission.
------------------------------------------------------
I actually like this as it gives me the benefit of cross-training - flying one type of mission while the training portion is learning other skills.
I had thought that I had mentioned this in one of the earlier patches, but it might have slip out.
The problem I see is that there is no indication that it is NOT training in the primary skill. I will look to addressing this.
Note the mission printed next to the training level. If the training level mission was same as the primary one (ie Escort in this case), then it wont print the extra mission.

Thank you Michael, that little added touch helps clear up any confusion.
