Disappearing transports

I would like to keep an airbase stocked with transports (and the occasional long range fighter), with a few para brigades on top, just in case I need one. That doesn't seem to be possible. I have plenty of Li-2s and a big stack of the C-47s that the capitalist imperialist Americans (oops, that is to say, my nice and friendly allies the Americans) have loaned me.
What happens is if I assign a bunch of TAPs and TRAPs from the national reserve into a unit is that they arrive at full strength, say about 30 planes in mid 1943, but very quickly lose it. Within 2-3 turns they are 4-5 ready planes each, with about 15 planes in "reserve" and the rest either vanished or destroyed. They aren't at all close to the front line and aren't getting bombed. They just attrition away somehow. It doesn't happen to any of the other planes in that unit or in nearby units, just the transports.
I can transfer them back to the reserve and in a few turns after coming back to reserve they are all at full strength again.
Is there any way I can find out what's happening?
