So, I'm having a go at the Japanese for a change.

Da Big Babes, modified with five times as many mines as normal. This means quite significant numbers of the more common mines (the Allies are getting ~800 aerial mines a month from December 42, the more common Japanese mines are in the thousands per month).

I've played 3 pbems as Allies now but this is a first for the Japanese side - the industry I will almost certainly make a hash of, so any suggestions there would be good. [;)]

Vague plans for the game - from Allied experience anywhere within P47 range in 1943 is dead meat and can be assaulted even without CV support. This means the Solomons is a bit of a red herring, once the Allies are enconced at Lunga they can attack all the way up the Solomons - I wouldnt say with impunity, but without carriers - and I dont think the Japanese really can do much about it.

Therefore I'm going to try and take bases to deny, as much as is possible, that sort of advance from beneath air cover in the Pacific. That means an emphasis on places like Port Moresby - Milne Bay - Rossell Islands, Guadalcanal itself but not necessarily the rest of the Solomons, Canton Island/Baker Island, Palmyra/Christmas Island, Pago Pago/Savaii...

Wont be attacking India. Might be attacking Australia, we shall see. Definitely want to do as much as possible to hinder the American juggernaut.

Opening turn is fairly historical, I tweaked a few things around. Lets see how it goes...

Tun 1 was the quietest opening turn I've ever seen I think.

3 BBs hit for heavy damage at Pearl - two BBs with 3 torpedo hits and a couple of bombs each and one BB with 7 bombs. A total of 61 Allied aircraft destroyed - Clark Field was moderately damaged. A tacnuke landed at Pearl though, 180 runway hits and a lot of damaged stuff.

KB will be lingering at Pearl for more... then we can get down to conquering the Philippines and Malaya asap.

Sort out your air research, don't forget to upgrade research factories to the next one in the chain before they go into production. A good one to start with is the Rufe, factories can be upgraded to one of the Zero's. Helps speed up the research. I figured this out a bit late [:)]

Base building is a lot slower too so i think that means you have to plan much early, from day one really.

And watch out for allied 4E's [:D]

Turn 3

KB gets attacked by CA Indianapolis and a bunch of DMSs - we see the rare sight of CV Akagi I think it was landing 20cm hits on a cruiser. KB gets dinged quite a lot but the 8" shells are unable to penetrate the belt armour on the Japanese CVs. During the day Indianapolis and a bunch of DDs are sunk by Vals, however, KB is now out of torpedoes and there were no more attacks on Pearl that day.

I'm going to try one more day and then KB is pulling back.


Mini-KB attacks Houston and Boise at Legaspi, the Kates miss a lot. Wish this happened when I was Allies!

British Hong Kong DDs tangle with Japanese TBs NW of the PI, get bombed and two are reported sunk. Georgetown and Alor Star plastered with bombs in Malaya, 25 or so sorties of level bombers attacking the landings at Kota Baru meet 30 odd Nates, the Nates actually dish out a wrecking with their popguns. Even a Nate can shoot down a Vildebeest.

Industry wise - I expanded HI, somewhat. I expanded a naval base, quite significantly.

Ramping up Mabel production, not going to produce Kates.

Converted the Nate factories into Oscar factories, and the Nate engines into Nakajima Ha-35 engines. Switched all floatplane production over to Jakes, and raised it very slightly.

BB Yamato and a couple of CVEs have been accelerated. CV Shinano has been cancelled.

Figure we'll leave it alone for a month and see what happens.

Busy turn.

Houston and Boise both accounted for. A third days attack on Pearl Harbour proves very costly for the CV air wing, but mashes up the BBs pretty significantly. KB is pulling back.

Elsewhere we've not deviated from history much, aside from PoW and Repulse not attacking Kota Baru.

With Houston/Boise gone IJN surface assets are ordered to aggressively patrol the waters S of the Philippines. Davao and Lingayen invasions ordered.

Malaya
Forces still advancing but we now have significant airpower on Malaya itself now, with Netties at Singora. Lots more base forces incoming. Allied resistance light, there have been quite a few Oscar sweeps over Singapore - the flying coffins have not fared well.

SRA/PI
Lots of naval action as the IJN hunts down Allied cruisers, I've been using a cruiser + 2 DDs and just sailing them around S of Mindanao. The butchery has been quite staggering. Fairly normal opening month... Mini KB has joined in.

Legaspi and Vigan taken. Forces have moved one hex SW of Aparri, will take that hex too. Massive Zero sweeps over Clark/Manila have shot down quite a few P40s for minimal loss, going to try bombing now.

Invasion forces ordered to leave Cam Ranh Bay for Kuching, Singkawang and Jesselton, most of the BB SAG that covers Kota Baru is ordered to cover it.


SOPAC
Shortlands, Wewak and the other PNG base taken. No forces to press the assault unfortunately, but two BBs arrived at Truk so we're ready as soon as LCUs can be spared. Very short of LCUs until the PI or Malaya (or both) are resolved, though.

High points of the turn - CA Takao torpedoed 3 times by a Dutch sub off Malaya, ouch. However CA Haguro, totally outgunned by Force Z, torpedoed PoW twice with huge 61cm torpedoes, ouch. [:D]

Not taken Wake yet, a division is en route from Japan. Why mess about, eh. The regiment that captured Guam is destined for Rabaul meanwhile, and that division at Wake will drive south towards Suva, which has about a brigade of Kiwis at this time. KB is passing Wake now en route to Tokyo for replenishment, I think they can be spared to support Fijian fun, I think Netties will do a fine job of keeping the DEI seas clear for now.

But time has passed, quite a lot in fact. My honourable opponent is a nutter who if he sees a carrier just charges with what he has. Fortunately what he has is a bunch of AMs really.

3rd January 1942

MALAYA/BURMA
The ever victorious forces of the Japanese Empire have taken every base between Tavoy in the north and Taiping in Malaya. The main bulk of Yamashita's forces are one hex from Temuloh atm, so we're a ways from Singapore. A couple of Allied brigades have been crushed in fighting near Georgetown and Alor Star and Kota Baru, as scripted.

Air superiority is totally mine at this point, Singapore's airfield has been bombed flat by Lilies/Sallies/Nells/Betties. The new AA stats of Da Big Babes is very noticeable, I've lost 90 a/c from AA so far in the game, and the guns of Singapore are responsible for quite a few. My usual stock 8000' altitude meant 2-5 planes being lost a day over Singapore, I nudged it up and up, seems like 11k feet results in almost no AA losses but still inflicts enough damage to be useful.

PI
On Luzon the Allies have been pushed back, pretty much, to Clark/Bataan/Manila. Clark Field is under siege and is fairly lightly held, hard hex to take though. I'm working on it as a priority.
Japanese forces have also landed on Mindanao and taken Davao, they are in the process of marching into the mountainous central hexes atm.

Also took Jolo and Palawan quite early on, there are Netties there but the Allies have kept well clear.


SRA
The China Sea facing coast of Borneo/Sarawak is entirely in IJ hands now - Mili's oil was entirely damaged though which sucks a bit! Singkawang is a major airfield and has an air flotilla, it's been making itself felt over Java, quite a few Dutch fighters have been shot down over Batavia already and some TKs that were bumming around in the Java Sea were surprised. Mini KB did a run through the Java Sea and bagged a few more, when he saw them he charged a bunch of AMs (???) who got sunk by the guns on the CS's. [:'(]
Working on a thrust to take Koepang with some TFs currently at Badelboad, I'm assuming three SNLF units (180 AV) will be sufficient, pretty sure this is a fair assumption.

CENTPAC/SOPAC
Kavieng is mine, Rabaul is under siege, Lark Force Battalion has done a heroic job against the Japanese regiment there but its slowly being beaten down. I got a division en route for SOPAC to snag Port Moresby early on, KB will cover.
There was a cruiser fight off of Wake while I was in the process of taking it, a Japanese CA was sunk in exchange for an Allied CA and a couple of Allied DDs probably sunk. Happened on the high seas, and an insanely aggressive Japanese admiral made things worse as he chased and chased and chased despite his TF mostly being out of ammo, getting his ships shot up again by the stragglers for no good reason.

A couple of Jap AMCs off Palmyra got found by 4 Allied DDs and were massacred, one is sunk and the other badly damaged and limping home. They may have 6 inch guns but that schooling is a reminder that they are not proper warships!
Another AMC NE of Pearl found an Allied AMC, the Canadian one I think it was, and managed to sink it for little damage but she still has to return home to rearm.
Two more AMCs are patrolling near Pago Pago, they've found nothing yet though.

Been quite aggressive in CENTPAC with submarine patrols and mines, Canton Island has been mined, and Japanese SNLF have taken atolls from Kwajalein to Funafuti.

After I take Port Moresby I think that division will be headed for Noumea, I'm not sure if a single division is enough to take Noumea but in January 41 the place is surely very bare.

Thank you for posting.  That's useful information about the 11K altitude yielding results without losses. I haven't played the Japanese yet and AARs like this are very helpful for my future planning.

Well, not no losses but few, more like 8000' in stock. At 8000' in Da Babes I was getting cut to ribbons. [:(]


January 10th 1942

BURMA
The ever victorious forces of the Japanese Empire are right up against Pegu now, so far without a fight. Just one division plus odds and ends, not ready for an assault on Burma itself yet I think.

MALAYA
Kuala Lumpur has fallen, the IJA under Yamashita press on. No Allied air power present at all anymore pretty much. Some Swordfish attempted to attack IJA shipping at extreme range, they were shot down by Oscars.

JAVA/DEI
Singkawang is up and running, Netties have closed down Batavia, and the Dutch airforce forced to pull back from northern Java. Not bad. I think I just got to wait for Malaya to be over now, air power is pretty much in place though.

Lots of supply just unloaded at Miri, to fix the oil there which was 100% destroyed. [:(] Mini-KB is supporting an invasion of Koepang on Timor to box Java in, heres hoping the Allied CVs have not massed at Darwin or anything crazy like that...

PI
On Luzon he's down to Bataan and Manila. I'm going for Manila first - a deliberate attack caused heavy casualties on both sides but did knock his forts down from 3 to 2. I'm shifting engineers around to use Clark Field itself as my main airfield which is good enough for full bombloads. Just a question of time I guess, lengthy siege is going on.

I've actually done the PI on the cheap as one division is actually en route to Port Moresby which should've been used on the PI, so that might cost me.

On Mindanao, no change really, the IJA have advanced from Davao to the mountain base NE of it, shock attack ordered this turn.


CHINA
IJA forces reach Yenen - not in enough strength to take it however, but a couple more divisions are en route. A bit further south of Yenen a reinforced division is driving the Chinese back towards Sian. Things are going well around here.
A bit further south on the SE road to Sian though the Chinese have stalled a half hearted Japanese drive. Not a huge issue though.

Still further south again, the territory between Changsha and the coast is quite chaotic, with several bases there in Chinese hands. He's even bombed shipping around Shanghai with Vildebeest and Hudsons, ineffectually but it did force me to deploy some of my Nate training squadrons at Shanghai to stop him. Nates proved perfectly capable of slaughtering Vildebeest fortunately. [:D]

And the only other active area is Wuchow, which is Japanese held but besieged. A division fresh from the capture of Hong Kong is en route, this will be adequate to drive the Chinese back.


SOPAC
Rabaul finally fell a couple of days ago, Lark Force Battalion lasted a week at least against an IJA regiment. Got a baseforce but not an air HQ in position, and some Netties.
A division is loaded up, escorted by KB, and currently passing by Shortlands en route to Port Moresby, we'll have that asap. I imagine I will re-embark that division to land at New Caledonia immediately afterwards and garrison Port Moresby lightly, with an SNLF unit I can scrounge up from somewhere.
Meanwhile a naval guard unit is en route to Efate.

Going to be quite a major effort in CENTPAC/SOPAC early in the war, I want to shut down the US as much as possible.


CENTPAC
Not much change here, been some heavy mining (this is Mines in the Pacific after all), both defensive aroudn the newly captured Tabiteau, Arorae and Funafuti atolls, and offensively, with Suva, Pago Pago and Canton Island all mined.



INDUSTRY
Well, I've run out of engines already. [:D] I forget which one - one of the bomber engines. Ha-33 I think? My bomber expansion far outstripped the engine expansion due to all the twins. Basically I had to stop Lily production for a while, but its not the end of the world.
I've stopped all Nell production now and converted to Betty, as the Betty is slightly better and it simplifies the engine issue.
Fighter production is now stable at about 80 Zeroes and 80 of the latest Oscars every month. I plan on nudging it up even further but not for a while, not until engine production has caught up.
Major expansion of engines has been ordered, it'll be a month or two before it really sees much impact.

ALLIED RESPONSE
The Allies seem very quiet. There are AMCs aggressively patrolling near Allied bases - off Christmas Island, off Pago Pago, between Alaska and Seattle... nothing. Sir Robin doesn't seem very in keeping with my opponents psyche, he's a very aggressive player. I guess something is being hatched.
