In the Sword scenario, I noticed that there is a 1st SS brigade as part of the 3rd Infantry Division that was parachuted into Normandy. Did the British really have SS units? I knew that Hitler had sympathizers in Britain, but I didn't know that they were grouped into a SS unit! Maybe they gave them parachutes with holes? [:'(]

Yup. They were actually renamed the 1st Commando Brigade later in the year precisely because of the unfortunate 'SS' initials.
EDIT: I notice this is my 3000th post here. Think I'll celebrate by buying the game! [:D]

Wow, did you get this information off the top of your head? I am always impressed by the depth of knowledge (not to mention memory)of some people here. Yeah, I agree that Matrix should give you the game- they should give a free game to everyone that reaches five stars...(I have a long way to go - I used to be fairly advanced until the matrix forum site was destroyed some years ago and they had to start from scratch).

Sigh... with over 30 Matrix games purchased, 3,000 posts and nearly nine years here not so much as a 10% discount voucher [:'(]
Never mind; certaining not regretting the purchase so far. Obviously haven't played long enough for any real assessment but it's certainly fun even without having fully absorbed the rules yet, and for what it's worth surprisingly good-looking; the screenshots don't do it justice. And runs nicely on the netbook, too [:)].

Well, the axis did have a SS units of British volunteers. I believe it was called the Free British core, or something to that effect?. At the end of WW2 some of them were hunted down by the British government and executed, this, despite the fact they had pledged that they would never fight against their homeland, and would only service against the invading communists.
As I understand it, the only fighting the Free British core did was during the ending days when the Reds in fact did invade much closer to Berlin.

If you ever play a Market garden game you'll see a British SS unit - the South Staffordshires.

As far as I know only the instigator of the British Free Corps (not commander, he was no soldier) of the unit, John Amery, was executed. Amery was a fascist prior to the war, and also made propaganda broadcasts for the Nazis which is the principle reason they hung him. I don't think anybody else was executed, although those identified did get prison sentences. They were traitors, after all; the Russians being allies at the time.
