The question I have always wanted to ask - is it correct that some USN ships receive SG radar in January 1942?

The Bagley/Craven class DDs receive a SG set in the 1/42 upgrade.

From what I have read, installation of SG sets started in April 1942 (apart from the experimental set on AG-34) and SG sets became available in numbers only at the end of 1942.

According to Friedman, a prototype SG went to sea aboard AG-24 Semmes in June 1941. Augusta received the first 'service issue' set in April 1942, shortly followed by San Juan and Saratoga. This seems to bear out your sources.
