Air group limits

Am I doing something wrong here?
I try to get my bomber gruop numbers up to 24 units per group but the next day they go back down to about 12.
example:
I have been disbanding small gruops to create larger ones. Usually when I have a couple of groups consisting of two or three B17's I will 'condense' them into larger gruops by using the 'disband' option. I make sure that there are enough pilots etc. before I do this an I'll end up with 24 planes in the group. Sure enough the next day I will have a single group with a small number of planes in it. No, they have not performed a mission that could have caused the losses.
What gives; am I doing something wrong?

There is a limit in the number of operational airplanes in each squadron - just look at the number between () in the squadron screen - I think it was 12 planes for B-17 sqdns (but higher for B-25 & B-26 squdn).
So if you manage to get more than this number of planes in a squadron then the surplus planes will go into reserve and seem to be transfered in the pool a few days later.

Hello, In airgroup display next to group name/number is a number in parenthesis This is the max size for the group. Allied heavy bomber groups are allowed 12 aircraft.
(Spooky types faster then I do)

rjr, thanks for the info.
I sure would like to have some of those 100+ bomber raids that I see posted though.
I guess that you just have to have a lot of 12 plane groups!

I did not know one could combine air units. What does one do?
Disband a unit then what?

When you disband a squadron, you are asked to which squadron you want to transfer the planes (and the pilots) of the disbanded squadron.

Hi, I do not disband groups I withdraw them. The planes and pilots are still tranfered to another group but the group will return with a new set of pilots once there are enough aircraft in pool. (I am afraid disbanding makes them go away forever does anyone have a clear understanding of the differance between these 2 options?

According to the manual the only difference is that disbanding a unit causes the pilots to immediately merge with the unit receiving their a/c. Withdrawing also immediately merges the a/c but removes the pilots from the war zone. They will return at a later date after merging with replacements when they are ready. See pg 87.

Disbanded units reform 90 days after they are disbanded.
Withdrawn units reform 60 days after they are withdrawn.
