Just reading about the 16th army/8th area army commander who took Java in 1942, ruled Java for 10 months, then was transferred to Rabaul. He eventually surrendered Bouganville/New Britian, his sentence was commuted from death to 8 years in prison for war crimes (1946-1954). He is recognized as a hero in Indonesia because he helped them get rid of the hated Dutch.

He also had good policy relations with the Indonesian population, unlike his replacement I believe.

Jeremy, do you happen to know who his replacement was?
Someone mentioned earlier that the commanders who treated the subject populations well were all replaced with cruel, oafish types.
