Strategies for Winning vs. the AI?

I've been doing mostly PBEM lately, but I'm about to embark on another campaign as the Axis vs. the Soviet AI. My first few tries were pretty unsuccessful here, but I was new to the game. I remember seeing some threads about people who were actually able to win the war as the Germans against the AI (on normal). I'm wondering what the best strategies are for doing this. What goals should I have for the first year?
