Another CTD with demo issue

I have similar problems to what have been described here. I have several game logs available and I've uploaded the latest here.

I really can't make heads or tails of the logs.

I start the demo, select either the tutorial or the scenario and hit next on the start new game button and I crash to desktop with no error messages.

From the looks of the log it looks like the game can't find your data files when loading.

See what's in your Data/ArmouredUnits/IL-2 SHTURMOVIK folder.

That is very wierd as that folder only contains some icons, no files as do the othersl That's quite wierd.

Those are the right files. The aircraft model only needs the .x and the il2.dds skin file.

I wonder why that gives an error in the game log?

Hi mfr,

Did you have any errors during the installation? Have you already tried uninstalling, re-downloading and reinstalling?

Regards,

- Erik

Hi Erik,

Yes I uninstalled the demo, redownloaded it and reinstalled it. There were no errors. The net installation said the first time that it was updating and the second time it said it was repairing. It finished successfully.

It appears the errors are occuring when the game is trying to load data from folders.

Any new ideas?

If you still have the downlaoded executable, can you check the file properties and make sure it hasn't been flagged to be 'blocked'. I just redownloaded the Demo again yesterday, and I notice on my system I had to 'unblock' the file before installing.

Also, if you are asked to reboot during installation, make sure you wait until you are totally finished with the install. If I recall, the first time I installed, I made the mistake of rebooting when prompted by Windows to restart when either .Net or Directx was installed, with the result being that the other component did not install. I'm not sure if this reboot message appears on other systems as well.

Thanks
rick

I don't see anything obvious in the properties that would indicate it is blocked. Can you be specific on where to check this?

Do you know of a way to check of .Net has been properly installed?

Disregard as I just found the selection. I'll try the unblocking and see if that works.

Hi mfr,

Can you give this a try please.

Microsoft recommends this tool to remove the damaged components: http://cid-27e6a35d1a492af7.skydrive.li ... p_tool.zip

Erik,

I'll give it a try. Unblocking didn't work.

Erik, that solution seems like a last ditch effort. Since the demo is the only thing I'm having trouble with I'd better hold off.

What is the function of the .Net in the demo?

Are you thinking that some other component of .Net is at fault other than the version that the demo installs?

Here are the .net framework versions installed on my system. The first is 32 bit, the second is 64 bit.
You can see that version 4.0.303... was installed today from the demo installer.

I also did a sfc/scannow of my system and there were no errors detected.

Hi mfr,

.NET is basically a runtime framework for certain modern applications and games, just like DirectX and it's just as safe to install. Panzer Command is programmed in C# and thus needs the .NET framework. All versions of Windows starting with Windows Vista already include the .NET Framework as part of the OS. All out installer does is update it to 4.0. This is something Microsoft created and it's completely safe for all versions of Windows.

Ostfront requires .NET 1.1 and 4.0 in order to run.

The repair tool is one that we've used before with customers and it's safe, but you can always backup before using it if you have any concerns. It's always a good idea to backup.

The reason I suggested it is that we have rarely seen systems where the .NET configuration was somehow messed up and caused .NET applications to crash. I'm not sure what causes that, perhaps an incomplete installation or update at some point. The only solution we've found for those cases is to use that repair tool.

Regards,

- Erik

Well I removed 1.1 which showed errors when using a verification tool and reinstalled it but it does not fix the problem

Out of curiosity, did the PC winter storm demo require 1.1? I was able to run that one ok.

Yes it did.

Well that's curious then because I could install and run that ok. So I'm not sure this is a .net problem.

I did use the tool that Erik provided and removed all the .net versions except 4.0. Then I reinstalled 1.1.
I did read in several forums that it was unnecessary to have 1.1 on Win 7 machines because .net 4.0 contains all previous versions.

Can anyone who is running the demo on Win 7 tell me what .net versions they have?

Hi mfr,

I'm going to ask the developer to chime in on this one with any ideas he has. I think we should go back to those error messages, as the fact that you're getting that far and that the repair tool is not reporting any other issues suggests that .NET is fine.

- Erik

Thanks Erik. I notice that it crashes both when I select tanks in the force screen and when I hit next I believe it is to start a new game. The errors indicate that it is having a problem accessing the data.
