German T1 on Novyy Rizadey

I don't have the whole game yet, so I'm still playing the demo scenario.

At my first order phase as German player, I feel uncomfortable with a main concern : how infantry can play a defensive role if it can't hide ?

Also I have some units inside buildings at the start of T1 order phase and there's no movement order available for them. I can't even change their facing. Why ?

Note : By the way I notice that the German interface in Novyy Rizadey is identified by the Soviet sign (on the right of the Unit List).

Not sure I follow. Infantry that isn't moving is trying to hide by default and is generally not easy to spot, especially for enemy vehicles. The tank riders the Soviets have with them are their best spotters by far.

You have to exit the building first, which is an immediate order and then issue movement orders.

Are you talking about the victory level bars or something else?

Take the unit out of the building. Unmount the building. This is the top order in the orders list. It's in gold. A mounted unit, whether in/on a building, foxhole, trench or vehicle cannot move.

Tell them to defend they will hide all on their own.

There are victory indicator gauges on both sides of the HUD. The one on the left is German, the one on the right is Soviet.

Good Hunting.

Do you mean that the Defend order is the way to hide any infantry ? Really hiding themselves, even if soldier images show kneeling men.

Sorry again about that. Feel like a pure newbie... [:(]

Whenever infantry is on Defend -> Stay or Engage -> Hold, they are assumed to be trying to be in cover. We reserved the prone animation for when a squad is suppressed or pinned, but even though they are kneeling, they are trying to hide. When we have time to work on the animations more, we can add a prone (unsuppressed) and a prone (suppressed) animation to differentiate those and give the player a better visual cue.

Well, great as it is, since we know that "defending" includes a strong "hiding" dimension. The manual emphasizes more the ambush function of the Defend order.

One more thing : I know that there's no fire arc in PCO, and that may be will be added in the next release. But how do we ask a tank to fire only to other hard targets (when we don't want to reveal our tank by letting it firing to distant infantry) ?

I tell my units to either hold fire until I want them to engage, so that they don't engage far off targets, or to take a good shot. There is no way at the moment to tell a unit type to preferably engage an enemy unit of it's same target type but that's a good idea to add to the orders menu.

Turn files are back to you.

Good Hunting.

Yes, with the Hold Fire sub-orders you can really use Defend to set an ambush.

Target priority in general is set within the game right now, it's not explicit. Tanks will target other tanks and anti-tank guns with much higher priority than infantry, but the best way to shorten the engagement distance or make sure they don't open fire is to use the Hold Fire orders. With 40-60 second turns, the best guarantee is to set your tank to Hold Fire -> All Fire and wait until the target you want comes into sight and range, then target it. Setting to Hold Fire -> Good Shot is another important order for conserving ammunition and also to make sure you don't open fire at long ranges.

Also, while there is no fire arc, there is a visibility arc and the facing of your unit effectively creates a fire arc because of that.
