Rail Movement Rate

The manual states that units move along rail lines at either 60 (minor) or 120 (major) miles per day. However, I've noticed that some of my units moving by rail can cover 8-10+ hexes per day. That's 368+ miles. Obviously the manual's movement rate is inaccurate.
Does anyone have any idea exactly how many miles are actually covered in a day? I'd like to know so I can predict arrival times for my units using strategic movement.

I believe the rates are per 12-hour phase, so you would need to double them to get daily rates.

That still doesn't add up! unless there are three movement phases.
On a sidebar, I've discovered that if you want to move a boatload of troops at once, hit 'set all to follow' and then click 'set all to march' and they will all move the next turn! This trick even works in China where nothing wants to move.
I still cannot figure out why it's almost impossible to move using the roads in China, but if I find one unit that will go via RD+ they all will!

I think there are one night phase and two day phases, one AM and one PM.

Not for movement, I just think the manual is off here. Movement rates for most other terrain types seem correct, though I never really checked.
