I don't see a desert hex? How do I create those, and fields? Snow? Weather?

Not sure I completely understand the question. There is a desert terrain (#37). You can use this and edit a random map with it e.g.
Also there is a fields terrain.
Snow and weather is usually implemented by an event which changes the terrain type from one type to another. See e.g. event 11 in the random game setup.
Does this help?

How do I access the desert terrain? It isn't listed in the map drawing, all I have are forests, mountains, plains, and sea. There are only ten landscapes listed to draw, desert isn't one of them.

You are probably using the classic.at2 masterfile, which is the default masterfile for the editor. You should edit the defaultmod.txt masterfile to redefine your default mod for the editor. You also can edit the generic.at2 file. I wouldn´t suggest you to load the editor and then set generic.at2 as masterfile, it gave me a big headache in Bomburmod for atg....eventually Vic saved me[:)]

I don't have any masterfile. I just followed Vic's Tutorial 101 in which he said to remove the masterfile? I don't know how to edit the masterfile, I don't even know what it is. [&:] I tried loading generic.ptmaster but I still didn't see any desert hexes.

Now I loaded generic.at2 -- it has deserts, why wouldn't I want to have this loaded???? [&:]

Then what should I use?? I don't really understand. On the one hand, if I don't use the masterfile then I can't make desert hexes, on the other hand???

Edit the .txt or load the generic2.masterfile. If you load the editor (without changing the txt) and then set generic2.masterfile you will have troubles.
Good options
1-Edit the defaultmod.txt to make generic.at2 your default file for editor (I can send you the modified file if you want)
or
2-Load the generic.at2 scenario
Bad option
3-Enter the editor (in the classic.at2 masterfile) and then change masterfile to generic.at2
