How do they work? Is it just bad luck when your Tiger blows up or are there factors that make some things easier to kill with mines? Does speed effect mines?

Experience plays a little part if the tank commander reconizes a minefield before he rolls into, yes speed will hurt as if your don't move hex by hex the CC won't be given a chance to indentify the field before hand. As for mine hits themselves it's random, you can roll 3 units through a hex without being hit but move a forth and it could be all over. This is why it's a good idea to have foot solider/engineers leading armor through any suspected fields.

I just recall Paul Vebber stated lately that vehicle size plays a large role too! The bigger the vehicle, the more likely it hits a mine! Best to make a forum search on this topic to find the thread in question. There was other interesting info regarding mines too in this thread.

Couldn't find the thread in question, but I would never doubt a fellow veteran. Paul has been talking alot abount mine warfare in UV but I couldn't find anything fairly recent related to SPWAW, he has also talked about how mines and clearing will play a role in CL. But it makes perfect sense that size would also matter. That's the the reason there are so many different types of mines from antipersonnel to antitank which could be set off by metal magnetisium and or the heavy weight.
