World IPv6 Day

Tomorrow is World IPv6 Day -- and it's actually overdue. All possible IPv4 addresses have been handed out to the various zones. (A little bit like all the possible telephone numbers having been apportioned to local telephone companies, though not yet to individual users.) More information is at:

I don't get it. What does this mean? Sorry, all I know about computers is turning them on and defragging.

All computers on the Net have IP addresses. These have been four sets of numbers until now, but because the Internet is now so big, and so full of garbage, the pool of possible IP addresses has run out. Therefore, an IP address will in the future be six sets of numbers, rather than four.

It means that even your fridge can have it's own address now.

And that in 10 years time, we'll be doing the same thing all over again.

It will take a bit longer than that. The lads behind IPv6 made it really, really big: there are more possible addresses than IPv4 by
almost 29 orders of magnitude. By the time we run out, we'll be colonizing Mars. (And yes, NASA has developed the software to run the internet in space.)

Our drink-with-team day was just now. I really hope things wont work tomorrow in work.
Edit:
I know I dont wish that really. Im thinking of my customers. They matter more than anything else. I cant let them down.

That's not the point. The point is that there are too many bloody gizmos with IP addresses.

Last I heard even XP had the preparations ten years ago. I know its long time and som might still not have converted but here we-go. I dont think its gonna be big though since the original network was planned against nuclear attack? Som bloody gizmos might be ten years old and its time they retire.

Will this affect all websites or just new ones? If it affect all websites how will it affect your bookmarks?

Dang, I never thought of that.

It won't, something clled DNS converts the name you type in to the actual IP address of the host server. So, when you type in
www.matrixgames.com your PC talks to a DNS (Domain name server) server and it's converted into an IP address so the internet knows where to send your request to.
So no, you don't have to worry about bookmarks.
