Hey guys, I just picked up DW recently and, as with most games, I like to read a book along side. I have read the "honor harringron" books but was wondering if you guys could recommend a good sci fi book to go along with DW. Not looking for so much combat necessarily....but maybe something similar to the foundation series? Something similar to how DW plays out.

The "Lost Fleet" series by Jack Campbell is very fun, and yes, lots of space combat. There are six short books in the series, with a new sequel series which started in April, 2011. The first book is titled Dauntless...

they both have this epic feel similar to the foundation series

Well, it's not exactly space opera, but I feel I have to tell you about this book and this author because I love it so much.  I've read the whole series several times over.

It starts with a book called "World War: In The Balance" by Harry Turtledove.  The author, IMHO, is the best at alternate history.

Thanks guys....I have read lost fleet but was looking for something more kike Dune or foundation...you know, to go with tje epic space empire feel. Thanks for the responses. I never read Herbert's dune so maybe ill give it a shot.

That's a classic and I'd always recommend it but for this game I'd suggest that Niven's Ringworld series might fit better.

Perhaps "The Damned" trilogy by Allen Dean Foster? I've always liked that one.

If you have not read them yet please try Asimov's Foundation Trilogy. It is dated but is extremely well written and is perhaps the basis for all Space operas...

Amen, even beyond the initial trilogy...Asimov is one of the greatest, no doubt about that

I'm getting an urge to read the foundation series. For various reasons, I've missed many of the classic SciFi books.
Iain Banks's Culture is also on my "must get ASAP list". The Algebraist was first book I've read from him and it was quite good.

A big +1 on that. As an aggregate, it remains my favorite science fiction work of all time.


One note, however: Just don't read the so-called "second Foundation trilogy" that was written by Asimov's colleagues after his death. It's simply horrid, especially the first book.
