You know, looking at this map makes me wonder if the only Westerners that can picture the location of New Britain in their minds without the need of a map are Pacific War buffs. 

Rabaul was abandoned as the capital of the province in 1994 due to its destruction by a volcanic eruption. That would be an interesting random event to have!

That goes without saying. I am a 5th grade teacher and MOST of my students routinely declare that Mexico, Africa, Dallas, Paris, etc., etc., are states. Very sad. Personally, I blame it on liberals that want all cultures celebrated. That translates into very little ownership/pride in THIS country. I had to battle with students and parents this year to have them (at least) stand and show respect while we said the Pledge of Allegiance.

Well...Alta California will soon be annexed by Mexico and become a Mexican state..so I can understand the confusion on Mexico at least, but every idiot knows Paris is a country not a state. <pushes green button self and disappears>

I have no doubt we are. Let's face it, kids get high school diplomas and some of them probably can't even find the US on a map, much less New Britain. [8|]

Reminds me many years ago. I filled out 3x5 architectural product request cards and sent them out. One of the responses that came back was from Beverly Hills.[8|]&nbsp;She was selling prints of paintings. Very expensive prints. She was&nbsp;explaining of the prints and office locations. Chicago, New York. And overseas countries England, Germany, Amsterdam and France. I interjected, Amsterdam was not a country. Then the Beverly Hills reared its ugly head.[8|]&nbsp;Well...I've been to Europe! Have you? Me being in North Dakota.&nbsp;Yes, I&nbsp;get the implication. No really what is the capital of Amsterdam? I don't have time for this. The line goes dead.

I was talking to a Korean gal recently who had spent some time in Vanuatu in the Pacific. I was stumped. I started naming some islands, and finally Efate lit a light buld. Me: "Ah, you mean New Hebrides." The point being us WWII buffs might know the world as it existed in the 1940s very well, but might not know the modern name of the place.

Being proud of one's country but not knowing its geographical limits and the general layout of the rest of the world - sad indeed. And potentially dangerous (for those outside the limits).
But the liberal's fault? Hard to imagine S.Palin being influenced by liberalism...

Are you saying Palin is weak in geography? I heard that Tina Fey - lampooning Palin - did the weak on geography thing.

Then there is the congresswoman who asked how close the Mars Rover is to where the astronauts planted the flag! [:D]
