a newbie questions

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 is a turn-based World War II strategy game stretching across the entire Eastern Front. Gamers can engage in an epic campaign, including division-sized battles with realistic and historical terrain, weather, orders of battle, logistics and combat results.

The critically and fan-acclaimed Eastern Front mega-game Gary Grigsby’s War in the East just got bigger and better with Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: Don to the Danube! This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

a newbie questions

Post by jnpoint »

1. Is it possible to let the computer choose the best leaders somehow? I have played the tutorial, and the best leaders were not assigned.

2. Is it possible to see an overview over the unit symbols in game?

3. Is it possible to se an approximately calculation of the combat result before the battle, so I can choose to attack or not?

thanks, and forget no.2
Instead I have another question: What does the numbers on the units tell me: ex. 12 -16 (I know that the number 16 is MP's left) - but what about 12?

If it's 1-1, then the first number is the offensive CV while the second number is the amount of remaining Movement Points. The game defaults to this for the currently playing player.

If it's 1=1, then the first number is the offensive CV while the second number is the defensive CV. The game always shows the non-playing player's counters in this mode, since if you're not playing then you're not moving, so you never need to see the MPs

Regarding attacks you need to get a "feeling" on how much you need to be reasonably sure to win. I usually try to use about three times more in attack value than the opponent has in defense, seems to work well in WiTE, worked just as well in SF/WiR ;)

As an aside, I would definitely recommend setting this as the latter. Default is to show movement, and especially as a Soviet player you need to be able to see your own defensive ratings.

The hotkey is 'Z' to change it back and forth from movement to defensive CV value. I do that constantly.

Well, now I have some new questions. Hope it is OK.
1. Why would I want to disband a unit?
2. Can bridges be blown up? if there is any. I can only find 'rail'
3. I have now learned that I have to move forward very fast as Axis, but it leaves large gaps between the motorized units and the infantry units - what is the best choice: to move forward no matter what or wait for the infantry?

for question 1:
you can have an interest in disbanding a unit when you are sure that this unit is going to be distroyed without a real benefit. Disbanding it will send manpower and armament back to your reserve for a better use
this is the same for some hq
go to have a look on the wite wiki :

With regard to question 2; There are no bridges.

Question 3: Thats one of the fascinating conundrums of the game, only you can work out the appropriate strategy. In 1941 Barbarossa I'd say go for it ( but make sure you do your phot recon. Any other time ( 42 onwards ), you have to a bit more careful [:)]
