Unconventional or cheap?

I am getting ready to invade PM and I have absolutely no clue whats really there. The intel reports in UV are very inaccurate. There could be just two infantry units there like it says or there could be seven.

So I was thinking about running a suicide recon mission where I bring a sub transport with troops and land in the PM hex. I will not only learn how many are there, but also their strengths when they attack and annhilate my troops.

Do you think this is too cheap?

Well, you could call it 'recon in force' :D. A better option would be some reconflights at low altitude.

I believe the Canadians did just that at Dieppe. They got creamed, and the Brits later said that it was just a raid to learn how to do Normandy (or something to that effect). But nobody told the Canadian dudes who got shot to pieces, that it was just a training exercise.
So, if you want to recon that way, hey there are precedents. (That's why I'd rather be a general than a grunt).
I can't wait for Dgaad to get into this string :) When does he have time to play?

Recon flight missions is the way to go. Prior to invading anywhere, a good week of recon flight missions is called for IMHO. The info gain by these missions is pretty reliable...

Actually you can get better intel than the allies did historically. They invaded GC and were surprised when nobody was there. They landed at Buna'Gona and estimated there were 2000 japs when there were closer to 20000.

Dieppe was always a short duration raid. The bit that went wrong was the failure to realise that the tanks wouldn't get off the beach dure to the shingle and the sea wall. The PBI (poor bloody infantry) got the short end of the stick. It was of huge use, because it showed the allies that they wouldn't capture a port easily on D day, so invented Mulberry.
