Hi there
I dont know if this questions has been asked before, but how does the japanese build new bases. I think I tried with all sorts of units type, but I've not build one singel new base.
Hope that someone can help.

Land an engineer unit with some supplies in a hex with a little red dot. Wait a few turns and you will have a brand new base.

More than a few turns unless you have a whole lot of engineers. Also if you don't land them on a red dot you have to attack to turn the green dot to a red one before any construction will take place.

Thanks...

But you have to be more specific about the unit.
I tried to set the gameturns to 7 days, placed both a navel construction engineer and a regular engineer with 20000 supplies.
I waited for over 3 weeks and nothing happend.... The us aviation engineer build a base in the same time space.

Sgt.Ghost,

The allies engineer units (EABs, CBs and a few Aus) have an advantage that the Japanese do not. Engineer Vehicles (10 - 20 each) this greatly increases their ability to build bases. I do known that one EAB (properly supplied at an SPS 9 beach will incease (expanding airfield only, no port expansion or fortification building) to a size 1 airfield in 2 days.

I think you would have to pile every Japanese engineer unit on a base to equal the ability of 1 or 2 EABs or CBs.

Doesn't seem fair to the Japanese, but thats the way it was. The penalty they paid for depending to much on manual labor and not machinery. Maybe in a future patch Rich Dionne could add a couple if IJN or JA engineer units with engineer vehicles? Or you could create your own using the editor.

Also make sure you are not trying to build a base on an airfield (0) dot. It takes many months to build it to a level 1 field. Always pick a dot that has at least a (1) for airfield size.

I found that out the hard way, waiting for months to get to 1. I wrote back to TRUk to send me a land grader and 2 d-5s.

what exactly does the raw airfield number mean on an unoccupied island? Does it mean that an airfield CAN NOT be constructed there if its zero or just that it would take momumental effort.....?

An airfield can be constructed there. The raw number just indicates how large an airfield can be constructed easily. You may construct an airfield to a size 3 units larger than the raw number, but it will eat up 10x the supplies for each unit increase above the raw number. The size 0 airfield is a special case. It requires a monumental effort and a much greater amount of time to get to a size 1 than a raw size 1 airfield would require to get to a size 2, per the manual. So it can take months. I recommend against buliding on size 0 bases.

The number displayed represents the size of airfield that particular hex can build with little or no major earth grading, jungle clearing, etc. required there first.
So a hex that starts at (0) means major preparations must be preformed to the terrain before you can even start building an airfield there. The same holds true for ports as well. This is represented in the game by causing construction times to be significantly increased for levels in excess of the displayed numbers.
Also the number represents the limit to the ultimate size of airfield that can be built. You can build an airfield or port up to a maximum of 3 greater than the displayed number, so a base with a listed (0) number can only be built up to a level 3 max.
Pages 102-104 of the manual cover base rules in pretty good detail.

I just never read it in detail

but assumed something along those lines. Thanx for the explanations...
