I hate rivers!

I need tips with regards to crossing rivers. The problem with rivers in the game is that once you end your turn in a river hex, you have a big problem when the enemy counter attacks. But I need to cross that river. Once the enemy sets up a checkerboard defense across the river, then it becomes a very solid front. :(

Bridge unit is your friend. :)

Is this MP?

If no which scenario on the campaign?

This is multiplayer.  Italy vs. Russia.
Bridge units also get a beating when they sit in the river.

put some artillery behind them two if you can that should stop most counter attacks, or try paratroopers mixed with air attack, concentrate your forces at one point and overwhelm him if he defends the whole river line stay out of his view then move into postion

Which map is this?

Artillery is what is needed. Any Air support to weaken the counter attacker first?

Bersaglieri and the Bear

Yes I'm forming up my arty but he keeps his troops out of view.
Mobile counter attack starts once I get stuck in the river.
My air force is stuggling. The Italian / Germans are better.

I'm waiting for the river to freeze up. :)

Move a Brückenpioniere to a hex adjacent to the river hex you want to cross. Get the forces you want across the river as close as possible to that river hex. At the beginning of the next turn, move the Brückenpioniere onto the river hex. Then move all your units across the river.

Does that work for you?

That's the general plan.  Easier said than done as it causes a lot of traffic jam. :)
