Frustated by Carthaginians

It seems the carthaginian forces are completely outmatched by the Romans, making almost every scenario with carthaginians a tragic farce

Lake trasimene turns into a carthaginian rout, bagradas is almost unwinnable and even Cannae is a challenge....

Probably the key issue is that carthaginian spearmen get cut to pieces by roman legionaries. Thus the carthaginians simply dont have heavy infantry that can stand up to the romans.

Something needs to be done to make the carthaginians stronger

The problem is they often were and it was only superior generalship that gave them a fighting chance. You need to avoid fighting the Legions and take out the support troops. You have much better cavalry and light troops and should focus on the flanks and avoid contact with the middle.

Unfortunately this does not work in multi player.

The shock carthaginian cavalry is usually very limited in numbers and and the numidian cavalry is essentially useless

I keep on reading about the prowess of Hannibal's heavy african infantry, but in FOG they dont stand a chance.......

add to that control problems, as the carthaginians (including spearmen) like to charge uncontrollably

Hannibals veterans were fighting againszt raw roman legions. If you're comparing Elite legionaries to Hannibals spearmen then yes they will lose - not much can take on an Elite legion other than weight of numbers and outflanking.
