Is there a way to set waypoints for a unit. Sometimes the way shown is not the way I want the unit to go.

That would indeed be helpful.
Like you press eg ALT and then "draw" the path you want to go...

Way points would be helpful but it's really micromanaging the game. And think most of us would use the waypoints as a way of getting around enemy units we aren't supposed to know about....but do.

example:

there is a river with a bridge, and behind the bridge is a city.

2 tiles away i have a bridging unit on the river.
I want my tank to cross the river over the bridging unit to flank the likely enemy postion.
wont happen unless you can see the enemy inf in the city.

and with some alt+ it is optional micromanagement anyway.

I thought about this and still haven't tested it properly but I thought the game always takes the path over visible i.e. discovered hexes (if the lenght of the path/amount of movement points is the same of course).
That path could still take you into the zoc of an enemy unit so yes then it would be nice to be able to specify the path.

I'll happily micromanage my way around then in that case [;)].
