"Hey Rube"

While investigating the origins of this term on wiki I found that in addition to the common meaning it was also used by the combat air controllers on USN carriers in WWII to signal the CAP of incoming planes.
It's the first i ever heard of this. Fact or fiction?

I always assumed that calling someone a Rube came from the inventor Rube Goldberg

Anyone who has seen the table top game "Mouse Trap" has an idea of Rube's inventions. I think there was a comic strip in the Sunday paper too.

JTD you r correct...every Sunday there was 1/2 page cartoon of Rube Goldbergs "New Invention", grew up with that one.
