Rail repair units

Just been rereading the manual again. One thing that caught my eye is that you can attach construction battalions and labor groups to rail repair units. My question is will that do anything to improve the efficiency of their repairs (I would guess not) or will the rail repair unit send out these attachments to work on surrounding rail hexes?
