Can you manually mine planets and send them to where you want now?

Ok, it's been awhile since I played because of life, computer crashes etc etc. I am finally playing DW and stupid me, decided to erase every civilian ship and mining stations I had and pretend I am starting from the begining now.

So I am thinking, what if I make a military ship with rescource extractors. Would I be able to send them to a planet and then mine that planet and when it gets full, then I can send it to where I want and then drop off the cargo? If so, how would I do this, or mining and dropping off cargo is automatic and can only be done by civilian ships, so I shouldn't even bother making them then?

The latter, I'm afraid. This scenario was explored by others and while you can collect resources with such a ship you can't seem to be able to drop them off...even with all the cargo bays and commerce centers and such. Seems like a hardcoded limitation to avoid using any ship outside it's designated role.

Thanks Data, I am relearing how to play again, so I can't remember if I did this before or not. Maybe I confused myself in making new ships but they were civilian ships instead of military ships.
