PBEM Problem...

The PBEM feature requires GMAIL (and appears to be using SMTP to send). Unfortunately my ISP (RCN) blocks SMTP traffic except through their own server (smtp.rcn.com) .
Is there any way to have the game use IMAP (which isn't blocked)? Or trick the game into using a server other than GMail (e.g. put a fake entry in the hosts file perhaps?)
I bought the game specifically to play via email, not it looks like I can't [:@]
