Kamikaze activation question

I thought Kami's would activate for a base within 20 hexes of Takao. I've got an example where they haven't, but the base is exactly 20 hexes. If it's supposed to be 20 hexes or less, I'll post a save. If it's less than 20 hexes, "Never Mind"

Dave,
I think that was once upon a WitP, but your memory is probably still better than mine. Either way, the manual now says 15 hexes.

The scale has changed from 60nm to 40nm, so the range has changed.
There was a bug initially at release where that range hadn't been adjust for the new scale. Was fixed in second official patch IIRC.

Ok that is understood, but was it intended to change the trigger range from 1200 miles to 690 miles? (20 * 60 -> 15 * 46)

Could it be that you mean to say that the range has been adjusted from 15 hexes (15 * 60) to 20 hexes (20 * 46): 900 -> 920 miles, which makes a bit more sense to me?

Patch 2
Change range to activate kamikaze to 20 hex from stock 15
The manual hadn't been updated before release. Not clear in my previous post

Base within 20 sea hexes of BASE_TOKYO, or BASE_TAKAO or BASE_SAIGON. Not counting bases in China or Tibet.

Just FYI, the comparison of hex size is 60 nautical miles for WITP versus 40 nautical miles for AE. Where you see "46" in AE that is 46 statute miles (which equals 40 nautical miles), and it is used by land units (as in when they move 1 hex movement = 46 miles).

Thanks for the pointer witpqs, but your remark immediately highlights this:

Activation range has changed from 15 * 60 = 900 nautical miles to 20 * 40 = 800 nautical miles. i.e. The allies have to be a bit closer to cause activation of Kamikazes. Is this the intention?

Whether the intent of not, that was the compromised distance.

Thanks, Michael, that clears it up. The key is "sea hexes" (and the manual does mention "traced by sea only", I'm just a little slow at times)

Note that bases in China really means bases owned by China. If the Chinese army spills into Indochina and owns e.g. Cam Ranh Bay Kamis won't get activated.

Is the base which is used to trigger activation required to be owned by the Japanese at some point prior to 1/1/44? Or can the Japanese just ignore capturing a small (non-Chinese) Allied base within range of Tokyo/Takao/Saigon to get the Kamikazes triggered on 1/1/44?

Also, are Allied controlled dot hexes considered a base for activation purposes?

I think you have it backwards. The Allies usually have to capture a base within the range to activate Kami. The Japanese player can't activate them, unless he concedes to (allows to be captured by) the Allies, a base within range.
If a base within range starts out as Allied controlled and never captured by Japan, then kamikazes would be active from 1944.

I asked the same question some months ago, and there were also this piece included in the answer -
Base must have an AF 1+. This would exclude the 'dot' bases unless they are built up. There is no limitation such that the base has to have been occupied by the Japanese and re-captured. However, these will never activate before January 1, 1944.

That's the answer I was looking for, thanks. In my PBEM there are a couple bases with level 1 ports within trigger range that were never occupied by the Japanese. Since their AF level is 0, they shouldn't trigger "the hordes" ahead of time. [:)]

GAH! I'll have to amend this oversight, since it will not be of benefit to me now...
