After an absence of a couple of months I´ve started two new PBEM, a fast paced one against mortar and a slower one against 1eyedjacks. Both are Babeslite games with AB´s extended map. Scen 26B, using the latest beta patch.

I don´t know much about mortar, I actually didn´t know anything about him as he´s not been very active on the forum so this will be foggy territory. Though he told me he´s very experienced and didn´t find someone on his national forum as he knocked out his opponents in fast order so he has to look for someone on the Matrix forum. [:)] Well, I was looking for an experienced player so let´s see how this is going to play out.

Means not producing any aircraft earlier than 4 months of their normal arrival as it would be quite off to see Shidens or whatever super advanced ac a year earlier (or even earlier) and it has been proved already that R&D can go totally off in that respect

I stick to posting annoted combat reports as I just like to show what really happened, though this time I probably won´t try to have 100% of the combat reports in the AAR as many things are just in the range of being boring to to being annoying, so the non important days will be either left out completely or having parts deleted.

the enemy decided to attack Pearl Harbour, something I always preferre to see than if KB bombs my subs at Manila as this is a bigger blow to the Allied in the game IMO, even though in real life the Pearl Harbour attack would be, not to talk about the loss of life. I was surprised in many ways here, first most of the Zekes were strafing the airfield, doing some damage but also suffering for doing so (one of the reasons I would never do that, total waste to lose even one of the Zeke super heroe pilots for a couple of mostly useless Allied ac destroyed on the ground). Instead many if not most of the Vals were on port attack which is again surprising to me as the Vals do sh*t on port attack and probably only one or two 250kg bombs actually did some damage to my ships in port, if you leave out a couple of AA mounts being destroyed which doesn´t count much for me. I would have used the Zekes purely for escort while having all Vals on airfield attack (to actually knock out the airfield and the aircraft there - this may well be a problem for the IJN if the Japanese hang around some more time) and have all Kates on port attack to care about the BB.

There were quite a lot of torp attacks, more than I´m used to and I think 14 torp hits aren´t that bad. On the other hand, how many torp hits were scored in real life? The Kates achieve a 50% hit rate with torps in this attack. Looking at the combat report, the damage looks severe, but don´t forget that a lot of bomb hits weren´t penetrating 800kg bombs from the Kates but 250kg peas from the Vals which don´t do much when hitting BBs in port. Nevertheless I´ve expected to see two of my battlewaggons sink in port, more about the damage in the next post. Besides that, I had around 5 times more damaged aircraft than I even had at the base, that´s pretty foggy. Overall losses at the airbase were light, same goes to flak losses of IJN bombers though.

I´ve been absent for several months to "calm down" and it takes halve the first turn to make me explode right away! Don´t know how many times I´ve said naval movement is totally borked, don´t know how many ships (of both sides) were lost to borked naval movement (no not refuel, not an op point issue or any other explanation, just non working movement) in my last PBEM and I start off losing Houston due to the silly happening that the TF was only moving 4 hexes this turn while being set on full speed! FULL SPEED! I´ve went back and loaded the turn to have a look at the ship and I can´t see a reason why it only moved 4 hexes. 11 super Kates are of course easily enough to sink an undamaged heavy cruiser, something we´re used to since WITP days.

not only did we loose Houston (not sunk yet but gone for sure), we also lose Marblehead. I´ve set Marblehead and Boise to merge with Houston and while Houston decided to move only a couple of hexes on full speed during the whole turn, Marblehead sprinted in, as well as Boise. Idiotic. This TF should be nearly a dozen hexes out of range of the enemy super CVE and not ending up two hexes right next to it. I really wanted to keep my ranting behind my back for quite some time but failed apparantly... [:'(]

Japanese paras drop into a dot base further inland, East of Clark field. This is again something I fail to understand as I´ve got no clue what this dot base is worth for the Japanese. Dropping paras at the coast would have made sense as this would mean having a friendly base to unload the invasion troops tomorrow but that dot base is totally useless as it also doesn´t cut the retreat path of any or my units. Hmmm...

To sum up the first turn, nothing really unexpected, two cruisers lost to the game engine and many attacks that make no sense at all to me or are done in a way that make no sense to me. [:D] Lol, won´t complain about that.

Unless I read your comments wrongly a possible reason why Houston moved 4 hexes was that you set it to merge with the other ships, iirc, once you do that the ships in question will slow down to allow the others to catch up so they can merge as ordered.

not really in that case, because Houston was the one the furthest North, while Marblehead was coming from the South (were Houston was directly going to) and the same was correct for Boise more or less, starting South East of Houston. And if a TF slows down to allow other ships to catch up you get a message during turn resolution, which also didn´t happen. It was just yet another wonky nav movement to experience. [:(]

I think it would have made a difference had you set the Houston and the Boise set to merge with the Marblehead... it's always about who you set to merge with whom....

but I quite agree....

my example of my "longest" PBEM...

10 CVs, 5 CVLs in 4 TFs set to "full" speed to attack Tokyo harbor with an alpha strike - the TFs were undetected....
the range to target was 18 hexes - max strike range 7 - so I set them to max speed to close in on the target within 1 turn... (max speed for all TFs was 8 - so a maximum of 16 should have been achieved - and I even odered them to move "only" 14 hexes) - a move of 11 should have been enough... BUT - all TFs only moved 10 hexes - so no strike happened, but the CVs were spotted...

now I set the ships to refuel 2 turns ago - to make sure than no "in-turn" refuelling would happen... - furthermore I made sure that AFTER no strike happened, to check the "ops" points - all were at 0...

so I have no freakin idea why they didn't move 1 hex more....surprise was lost, and I had to withdraw my CVs....
an excellent opportunity it was too - night attacks had the Tokyo AF almost closed, and at least made my oppponent move his fighters out of there - only about 20 were left after recon... - and I had about 1200 planes in those CV-TFs!

oh - and about 140 ships in Tokyo harbor.... - amongst these BBs, CAs, CLs, SS etc etc etc....

I´ve set the other cruisers to join the Houston because the Houston had the longest way to the destination hex so it was kind of logical to me to set the Houston as lead ship. Oh well, it´s been uncountable times both sides lost ships due to naval movement not nearly doing what it was expected to, never having an explanation for it to fail.

This is how my BBs looked like right after KB´s attack. I have to say I was positively surprised when I saw the actual damage as I´ve been sure I would be able to save all of them if KB wouldn´t attack another time. And to be honest, I definitely expected KB to attack another time.

And these are my air losses of the first turn. Have to say I´ve never suffered so few losses on turn one with PH being the only major airfield that has been attacked and then with far too few Vals. We claim 15 Zeroes but that may well be overclaiming, still, not using them for airfield strafing would probably mean not having lost 10 elite pilots so that´s fine with me. Losing nearly a dozen Catalinas seems to be the biggest loss for us. [:D] Losses to both Vals and Kates is totally disappointing though.

[8|] oh how I love it... either I fail to understand the routines or they don´t do what ppl think they do... Years ago the consensus was that battle, movement, upgrades, etc. happen from 0 to x, means TF 1 moves, then TF 2, then TF 3 and so on... so... as I´ve expected enemy mines at Bataan (which player isn´t doing this?) I´ve FIRST created a minesweeping TF to move there, then lots of TFs containing low value throw away freighters (those that get sunk by the IJN anyway) to move out of Manila and only then I´ve created my sub TFs of one sub each having the HIGHEST TF numbers of those leaving Manila...

sooo.....

what happens? My subs move FIRST, one after another hitting one of the three dozen mines laid by the IJN mine layer sub... crazy... what got me upset on turn one goes hand in hand in turn two... and I´ve thought I could stop ranting... [:D]

as you may have noticed, no attack of KB against Hawaii. That doesn´t mean the IJN has turned around, KB has been spotted sitting a couple of hexes off Hawaii for a sight seeing tour. I don´t know if mortar expected me to run with my ships or if just the next wave of attacks failed due to weather, neither in the morning nor afternoon there was any cloud over KB so I doubt any strike was ordered. I have to say that I really wonder about the things that are going on and we´re only into turn two. [:D] No BB is in danger to sink, my fighters repair at an ok rate (due to the low damage on the airfield service) and we´ve got around a hundred fighters on Hawaii IIRC, with 1/3 being obsolete types though. Needless to say that all pilots are total crap though.

lol, another try, another borked NAVAL MOVEMENT... while the first PT managed to move six hexes during the night to engage shipping, the second one was also tasked to move to Vigan but FAILED to move six hexes and showed up during the DAY!!! Something that shouldn´t happen... a) because there´s no reason not to move those 6 hexes and b) with retire the TF should never attack during the day...

I try to tell me every turn not to use my ships to attack at all because I know just too well that naval movement screws it up too often (pretty much an AE thing though) and the IJN is so much superior to the USN and RN that it is a bad idea to engage them anyway, no matter if in 41 or 45, the IJN will always be worth two or three times the USN.

lol, had some destroyers trying to engage KB during the night (not really hoped to do damage but perhaps causing a collision) and they returned to PH during the day when they were picked up by KB´s search aircraft and KB sent out more than a hundred aircraft to attack them. Lots of bombers and unfortunately also a big escort so I haven´t expected anything else than my fighters being shred when already being disappointed about the number of our fighters in the air. We quickly lost a dozen fighters but then they were able to break through the escorts to target the bombers. Oh how nice is that to watch that early in the campaign... Of course one couldn´t expect a slaughter within the bomber formation but 20 bombers being shot down by the Cap is coming pretty close to a slaughter I would say. Being shot up and bad weather prevented a massacre within our ships while one of the DD was hit by torp and sinks all hands down. I would call this a first success for us though. [:)] It will be an effort to wear down KB´s airwings and all the highly skilled IJN and IJNAF units and the earlier we achieve some successes the better.

This attack supports my thoughts that mortar is having KB on standby waiting for my ships to flee. But why should I attempt to do this?

in the afternoon my DDs are attacked again as well as some bombs are dropped over Hawaii... most bombers seem to have attacked the Destroyers and those that didn´t were hit hard by flak over the port... damage again was minimal while we lose another old DD... I really don´t get why the enemy isn´t ordering at least one more major port strike of the Kates and have the Vals bombing the airfield... CAP numbers were disappointing but when looking at what we´ve shot down today, I can say I´m more than satisfied...

If you make the minesweeping TF first and give it a destination of Bataan, they will then sweep mines before any other TFs move. If you have them just pass through, they likely will not even detect the mines. Remember the minefield was laid that night and has not been detected when your TFs move from Manilla. I know it works because I have used that sequence in both my AI games and my one PBEM game. I usually give the minesweeping TF a home port of Tarakan.

yes, correct. The minesweepers were set to Bataan. They are still there two weeks into the campaign. They just didn´t arrive there first even though they had the lowest TF number. Homeport of the AM was still Manila. In the end, not working as expected still gives the most realistic outcome.

since day two we´ve been into the problem that with the given, new feature of mid ocean intercepts it is pretty much an uber feature now as it makes a couple of TF being able to create a bulletprove blocade of the whole Philipines as each and every time an enemy TF is in the same hex as a single or two ship TF of mine we have a surface combat popping up... in the next couple of days I´m literally losing 90% of my ships from Manila to enemy surface combat TFs as they end up in the same hex. Wonder how hard it is to find a xAKL in a 45 mile hex at night. And the funniest thing to watch is when it says "TF xy retreats from enemy surface TF", "TF xy sets course for z" as this is even more working into the attackers hands. As it stands now, my TFs are coming from the North, the first one is attacked, the rest retreats NORTH one hex and right after moves SOUTH again one hex. Result is that the TF moved exactly nowhere and is sunk by the enemy. OMG, this just doesn´t work. Oh well, I´m sending out my ships in all directions, there may be one or two getting out. With mid ocean intercepts and waypoints there is no way a player can fail to obliberate whole fleets being spread out over thousands of square miles with one or two surface combat TFs.

the enemy keeps attacking PH and this time does better than before, even though our CAP is also more numerous than any time before over Hawaii... 56 Zekes aren´t enough to keep our fighters from attacking the bomber formations and we score quite some kills both with our fighters and fully alerted flak... this doesn´t keep a damned Kate putting a 800kg bomb right into the magazin of Nevada that blows up and sinks... that´s absolutely unlucky because Nevada has been the least damaged one of the eight BB at Pearl. [:(] Unfortunately the enemy got an unlimited supply of 800kg bombs for IJNAF bombers attacking ports which makes them far more lethal than they were in real life and compared to Allied port strikes when you see 500lb bombs bouncing off enemy capital ships. As the exp requirement for Allied bombers using > 500lb bombs still hasn´t changed from WITP (as far as I know) we will never see Allied bombers using anything bigger than 500lb bombs if it isn´t the default load anyway. While IJNAF bombers get the 800kg bombs that are far more lethal than the Allied 1000lb bombs that still fail to pen a capital ship. It´s a pity that this goes for one side but not for the other, in fact, after one strike KB should either have to attack with 250kg bombs or with torps, if there are no torps anymore, go with 250kg bombs (and smaller ones). As it stands now, KB can whipe out all BB with a more or less unlimited supply of 800kg bombs (only limited due to max sorties of the carriers) if the player wishes to do so. Thinking about this, there should be a house rule of a maximum of two Kate port strikes max. Everything else is highly unrealistic when it comes down to the ability to sink BB in port. I like when Pauk still says it´s an Allied edition. [:D]

On the other hand I have been lucky enough to lose only one BB so far (another one is in sinking condition now). Repair time of the heavily damaged ones is nearly three years now though, so those could be effectively seen as sunk too as they won´t play a role in the war anymore.

the enemy has started to attack Singapore... damn, one day too early as I´m in the process of moving in the AVG but can only do that one by one due to paying PP and very limited av support at the bases I use to fly them in... even though the Buffalos score some kills, they aren´t really suited to fight Zeroes... at best they´re suited to fight Nates but I seriously doubt they will ever engage crappy fighters like Nates... I have no skilled pilots and also got no squadrons somewhere that I could use for training (unlike for the USAAF). This is true for both the British and Australian fighter squadrons so as soon as I will have run out of Buffalos I will also have run out of pilots. I don´t say run out of skilled pilots but these are still better than the 20 skill replacement pilots I get from the pool...

so much about the hr and the ceise fire in China... in this case it didn´t do the Japanese any good though and as they´ve moved across a river I think this rather happened by accident...

Looking at the air losses, we´ve only lost some 40 aicraft more than the Japanese with nearly halve of their losses being Zeroes which is quite good IMO. Doesn´t change the fact of course that all my units will be exhausted soon and then we can keep up reducing the enemy´s strenght and IJ losses will be replaced in no time. Nevertheless we seem to do quite ok so far, even though that this is more a result of my opponent´s actions than ours. KB was reported to steam West today...

Why don't you set the threat tolerance to never retreat to stop your ships from sailing back and forth?

because I´ve thought it would work well and actually would be a benefit to find out it isn´t. [8|] When I realized what is going on I was just too lazy to adjust each and every of the dozens of TFs fleeing the area and the end result would probably be the same, when a TF ends up in the same hex as the enemy and the enemy has any op points left my TF is spotted and sunk. A week later, literally all my TFs were beat up by three enemy surface combat TFs.

At the risk of stepping into something smelly, about sweeping the mines at Bataan. If you make the minesweeping TF first and give it a destination of Bataan, they will then sweep mines before any other TFs move. If you have them just pass through, they likely will not even detect the mines. Remember the minefield was laid that night and has not been detected when your TFs move from Manilla. I know it works because I have used that sequence in both my AI games and my one PBEM game. I usually give the minesweeping TF a home port of Tarakan.

gave them Bataan as destination, the only ship types I´ve ever given patrol orders have been subs.

bringing the first part of the AVG to Singapore was a full success already as many Zekes and even more Oscars were lost for the loss of only 4 H81-A3... probably overclaiming again and most ac crashed on the way home or might have been write offs but nevertheless a nice loss list for early Dec 41... every dozen Zeroes lost should slow down the Japanese a bit...
