Was wondering about TOAW 3.

Hello everyone,

Just signed up on these forums because I had a few questions about TOAW3. I first heard about this game from some people over at Subsim.com I mostly play games like Silent Hunter but was reading a thread about other "RTT" Wargames out there and TOAW3 was mentioned. Anyways after some reading some very very old articles on Google I was interested and want to find out more. What I mainly want to know about is how old is this game and is it one of those games that is worth buying without having a demo? I mean I have tried to find some youtube videos of it being played but have not come up with much really. I dont mind the hex based game play or turn based format as Civilization is a common turn based favorite of mine. Obviously Military simulation/realism is something I like in a game as well, as I have many mods that add more realism to a game like Silent Hunter.

This game in Canadian is $50 for the Digital Download and I'm trying to look at what I can before I make the commitment. The thing I'm worried about mostly is getting this game and having it not be supported in the near future or that I might not like the gameplay overall. I was just stopping by to see if anyone had any concerns like mine or if there was a forum on here I looked over that might have some gameplay or would sum up the general feel of the game.

Thanks for reading.

-CG.

Try this one - tm.asp?m=2295777

... and there are so many other threads you can spend a day or more rooting around.

Everybody likes different things and ways to play, and TOAW covers about everything. There are scenarios that are easy to play for beginners and you don't have to get into all the complex stuff. That's what I like - learn as you go.

There is no indication that support will be disappearing anytime soon, and new features are planned for the future. And any questions you have are usually answered here quickly, which is very nice.

Well I think I got myself into something that's over my head.

Ended up buying a copy and I just cant seem to be able to get a grasp on TOAW 3. I seem to find myself staring at the manual for two hours before I can even figure out how to make a move heh. I'm going to keep playing for the next few months but I just find the complexity and the fact I dont know a single thing about the system hard to over come. I may end up regretting spending the money on TOAW, hopefully I can try to get this figured out.

Anyone have any idea on how to learn this game? I've been to the "A how to for beinngers" but I cant make heads or tails about what he is doing a scenario I dont have.

I have a detailed first turn AAR for my "France 1944 D-Day" scenario:

tm.asp?m=1546619

New players have often found it useful because I show how individual attacks are set up and a lot of my thinking on them. It is quite advanced, though. So be sure you've at least gone over the tutorials to get the basics first.

Hey, mate, here in Poland we also - I mean me and a good friend of mine - had to pay in dollars -or pounds - I cannot recall distinctly now - the same ammount of money and I would say that our consuming capacity in terms of currency and the wages here is much lower than Yours, yet still it was, have been and still is worth every penny - or cent.

I know it's hard to get through all the peculiarities of the game system; myself at first rejected sharply any idea of my being interested with that game, then I played against the AI / PO for some time, moved on to challenging human opponents which turned out to be an ultimate experience in playing that game and only after about half a year of fighting other people I started to grasp the full depth and complexity of the way the game re-creates the battlefield reality. I only read the manual once just to know I did that, then played the tutorial scenario to some point following the instruction - the rest was learning on the job purely. I can rememeber a few instances when I had a strong impression that I saw something in the manual here & there while I was reading that, tried to trace it and make a reference and on most occassions had strange issues with that - apparently there was no such thing or it was something else somewhere else.

The thing is - yes, it's complex and a daunting task to learn a game demanding as TOAW is. That is why I never started playing "Point of Attack"; it has crossed the invisible boundary between hard , but doable and impossible to bear. TOAW does not fall short of that - it's complexity ends where it would start to be just a self-inflicted torture to get through instead of fun. I used to think and still do that any decent simulation needs to be complex in order to incorporate lots of factors, but after all it has to stop somewhere. TOAW does that at the right point.

Do not get intimidated for too long,You are likely to miss a lot.I also moved here from "Operation >Flashpoint<" and small unit tactics in search for a greater challenge. I got all I bargained for - and lots more.

One more thing - there is a great community here layes ready and eager to support You; You won't need manual for much longer ...

Good luck.
