Ok what am I missing with this unit, there higher priced by $26 then the Grenadier but there stats are not as good as a Grenadier, so is there some special power they have I am not aaware of, or is this a overlooked mistake in pricing?

Pioneers;
-have a bonus against fortresses
-ignore entrenchments

So they are great at atacking cities and well dug in units, they are somewhat less usable in the open, but imo that is what tanks are for.
