Plagues

Has anyone had one yet?

Presume its one of the new random disasters that can occur

Just had one which lasted for 9 months game time, it spread to three colonies and wiped out pretty much the whole population of these worlds, two of which were highly developed. It wrecked my economy for around a year so i had to pretty much disband my military.

Not complaining though, its a great addtion that makes the game more challenging . Question to the devs:

- is there a counter to this, can you quarantine these worlds, do medical facilitieshelp (my two developed worlds had medical facilities)

There is no counter to plagues. Sounds like you got a particularly nasty one there. There's several different types of varying lengths and levels of contagiousness.

How can we stop/prevent plagues?

Medical facilities help your population against normal diseases. The plagues, like the other major disasters, are considered beyond the scope of what normal technology and facilities can manage. You have to roll with the punches on these disasters and rebuild as quickly as you can. If a particularly bad plague hits your main world and trade hub, it's almost certainly going to be a bad thing.

That being said, it's probably worth adding a few more things that you can do to influence the outcome in the future.

1. Quarantine option, to minimize the spread of the plague. It should not, however, be a guarantee against the spread.
2. If you have a plague event running, is it possible for it to open up an intelligence agent mission "spread plague" - giving you the option of spreading the love around? I'm not sure how this would impact on the AI code, but it should be a possibility.
3. Access to Zentabia fluid should be of some help, given its description. Note "help", not "panacea".

Ooh, yeah.. there should be an option for total quarantine, where you declare you the entire planet a lost cause. This could heavily reduce the chance of spreading, while at the same time dooming your whole colony to die. I love "Last resort" options.

Intelligence option to spread plague? I'm modding in Jack Bauer as my intelligence agent for counter intelligence missions :o

Nice ideas.

I had a plague that spread from one planet to another, and then back to the first planet again, it got a double dose [:D]

Luckily it didn't seem to have a devastating effect on either planet, and it also spread to a nearby Boskara world, mwahahahaha

+1 for a plague that creates a mutant/zombie race in the game as a kind of irrational faction. instead of building, it takes over colonies, stations, ships, etc.

I can't remember the name of those guys in serenity... but like that.

Ooh yeah good one. The original Sword of the Stars had AI Rebellions that could happen too, and they'd spread quite violently. I'm always down with unexpected disasters!

Hello, just my 2 cents.

I think that will be good to do some counter plague things that can help to cure plague or helps to end it sooner.

For example create special Medical ship design with passenger modules, medical modules and maybe some science modules (or create some special new module for this). Then player can build those ships and send them on infected planets to help them.

What you think about it? It is good or bad idea?

I think that generally is better to have some option how to solve or at least reduce bad effects of most disasters. MOO2 had them and it is better for players that they can do something (not only rebuild destroyed world).

And already mentioned Total Quarantine possibility can be good too.

And second thing - maybe there can be some new possibilities in diplomacy related to disasters. For example when disaster happens then friendly empires (or alliances) can offer you some help - for example finance. Or they offer you medical help that will cure plague sooner. And opposite - when some friendly empire have an disaster then you can offer them help (that will increase good reputation of course).

P.S: I did not have plague yet so I do not know what possibilities in Legends are exists now.

I too am getting the Plague everywhere. I cannot access the damage it is doing, but it is spreading everywhere and to other Empires. I did notice that on one of the first Plague alert screens, I figured I would jump to that Planet and see what the deal was (because I never experienced a Plague before) - and I saw a little outerspace squid (the size of an escort) trying to get out of orbit but my fleet was shooting at it. Then I am not sure if my fleet destroyed it or it went into hyperspace, but it was gone. I thought to myself, was that spreading the plague (like dropping spores).

I then thought, well, I think I killed it, I am good. And then the Plague spread again. Then I thought, is there a way for one of the other empires to make them (like Armada) and they sent it to me? I checked the Research window and did not see a "Plague Production" weapon.

Any thoughts on that Squid? I am 100% positive I did not imagine that.

Ardilius are a space creature from Vanilla... I hope then don't spread the plaque though.

What is Vanilla? I click on all the features (Shakturi, storyline, etc.., ) doesn't that mean non-Vanilla? Not sure.

Vanilla generally means original not modified game.

In this case he means original Distant Worlds without all datadisc or Distant Worlds: Legends without community mods.

With the disasters, other than the Silvermist and the Legendary Pirates who you can fight, the main thing you can do is deal with the effects and recover as quickly as possible. Some plagues are much worse than others. All can be overcome and you can still win, but if you get hit very hard, especially on your homeworld early on, it will be a very challenging game. Disasters are much easier to handle in the mid to late game rather than the early game, but as in real life it's a matter of luck (and some races have modifiers that mitigate disasters) whether you get hit.

- Erik
