Another thing, how would the influence and borders handle this situiation. is this a bug or just an extremly unlikely set of events like getting struck by lightning while getting attacked by a great white shark. Seriouly I'm Scrating my head here I've played probalby 60 plus games if not more of this game since the orgional distant worlds and this is the first for me this has happened

I can answer the first part; it is possible for empires to start in the same system. It is even an option to choose that in the empire set up I believe. It just "randomly" decided to put another empire in the same system as yours.
Dunno how it handles the culture\borders though..

I once started with another Empire in the same home system too, no idea how it would work with the new border system though.

I had a ROTS game where this happened. Luckily the rats were friendly but given that we started in one corner of the galexy it made for a messy map!

Getting back to the OP -

Should this be happening?

With my luck, I would start in the same system as the Shaturi!

What's wrong with that? No trouble of getting a fleet there to invade them before they build some decent defenses. Sounds like a Brucie bonus to me!

Starting in the same system as the Mechanoids would suck, though. [;)]

This isn't something I say very often, but Kayoz has a point here.

I'd say that by default, homeworlds should never be in the same star system. Honestly, that should only ever occur if you specifically check the option for it (if there is one). Otherwise, homeworlds should be distributed more or less evenly.

Again, this is only what I'm suggesting should happen by default, with no tweaking of the game setup options.

In the game I'm having right now, I had two colonies in one system. I lost one colony to an empire I was at war with. I couldn't build anything in the system. So guessing in this instance when you have opposing empires with colonies, your influence cancels each others out.
