Bad graphic issue

I Basically got the game through a friend who stopped playing, its patched up fully - however a good 20-25 minutes in game my video card locks up (Generally my laptop will overheat which is an issue).
I tried toning the graphics down to next to nothing but it does me no good, any help?
I basically have enough time to get a 4 man squad together, buy some equiptment and start the first mission then my screen goes blank (pretty much requiring a hard boot).
This is common for any game which higher end graphics.
