OK, you can file this post under "Bizarre request of the week" if you wish...

But I'd like to see some German units in the WITP, will there be any? Yes, I am among those who think that every serious wargame should feature Germans in some manner, even if only as a token force )

German raiders operated in Pacific, as did some subs. One German raider (can't remember it's name right now - was it Komet?) entered Pacific via siberian route, spent some time in Japanese harbors, raided some ships in New Zealand and Australian waters, and even shelled the island of Nauru. OK, all this was before Pearl Harbor, but still...

We want Germans, give us Germans!

And yes, of course, give us the Mediterranean game, after WITP... )

Siberian route, what did they do, drag it across the ice? reminds me of the book "the dead sea submarine".

The only Germain ships I know of operated only in the Indian ocean and were all hunted down and sunk.

The Submarines, coulldn't operate for long since the USN sunk all their "milch cows" and the Japanese refused to supply the Germans with necessary fuel and support facilities in their SE Asis bases - talk about ingraditude.

No, they did not drag it accross ice, they simply waited for summer, and with a little bit of help from Soviet icebreakers...

Yes, Soviet ice breakers as this all happened in IIRC summer of 1940. when Germans and Soviets were still friends.

Komet then spent several months in Pacific, sank some ships near New Zealand, shelled Nauru and returned home to tell the tale (it was sunk later in the war, though).

As I said, this certainly is a bizzare request, but it would be such a nice touch if this ship (and maybe some others) would be resent in the game

Hey, I just checked, German surface raider Michel was sunk by US sub east of Yokohama in 1943. - now I definitely want to see some Germans in WITP! )

I know at least one German sub was sunk off the coast of NZ.

They obtained their food and fuel from Japanese held Singapore.

But one submarine does not make a task foprce

There were sinkings in both the indian & pacific oceans due to german Subs and raiders during WW2.

I will get some fun details posted when I get home.

They were, in the larger scheme of things purely nuisance value.

Yes, well, of course they were only of the "nuisance value" in the grand scheme of things but since we're talking hardcore grognard and historical games, where every sub chaser and barge tends to be accuratelly modelled, why not put few German subs and surface raiders in, to get the additional "chrome", as some would say... ?

I certainly support the idea of including any U-boats that served in the Pacific, and if there was a surface raider sunk off Yokohama in '43, then she should be included as well as any others who did serve in the time period of the game. It will all be just so much nuisance value, but running a war is dealing with a lot of little nuisances...

You lads are overlooking one of the great unsolved mysteries of WWII: the duel between HSK Kormoran, in the Indian Ocean off the Western Australian coast, and the light cruiser HMAS Sydney. Both ships were lost, but the Sydney disappeared with all hands after going out of sight of the Kormoran--and to this day, no one knows what happened.

Umm, maybe the ship sank with all hands, and no one to tell the tale?

Or are you suggesting aliens and Bermuda Triangle-like areas should be included in WITP too? :rolleyes:

I must admit that I would like a little German influence. I know, its just a technical issue, but it would be a great splurge item. I hope maybe the Med Game and WitP can be linked together somehow. I'm thinking about buying a supercomputer to just play wargames.

It certainly seems one-sided for the japanese to fight the americans, british, aussies, kiwis, indians, chinese, dutch, canadian, philippines, russians, etc - at least in the long scenarios. But then - this is historical.

Another aspect which I hope (a fat hope I suppose) it could be included in the WITP game is some form of simultation - be it naval or land action. I remember playing Task Force 1942 by Microprose where you can lead surface action ships in various formations and engage japanese ships with the ability to drill down to individual ship to launch torpedoes or starshells etc and even see torpedo wakes on the screen. Here you can really cross the T but then I suppose we would really need supercomputers to run this game.

I LOVED TF 1942! I like it alot better than Fighting Steel, which was also cool. I liked the GNB games too, mainly the damage control feature. That was a nice touch. I still play all of these from time to time, but I always come back to TF 1942. I guess I love being able to take over the guns and fire away!

How about Germany conquering the UK in '40, remaining allies with the USSR and all those Brits head home to be demilitarized as result of the peace treaty? Singapore and Australia look very bare then. Maybe a crazy one where Axis Commenwealth ships appear and Australia fights for Axis as well? Actually, the huge US fleet that was planned and built starting in 1940 was in case the Royal Navy fell into Axis hands, the USA could STILL have superiority vs the WHOLE world. Japan really didn't have a chance if you think about it (Germany losing that is).

I thought you ment this one. I dove on it in Guam but the spelling is differnt.

There is also the SMS Cormoran, a German ship scuttled in WWI.

One I tried to build such a scenario in the old PW, the Germans win the war against the British in 1940 and then continue their fight in the Pacific with their fleet and some units. Didnt work but I thought the idea was nice. But one of the main problem would be the range of the axis fighters, they had barly enough for Europe, let alone the Pacific.

LOL - Graf Zeppeling shows up and bombs Panama. Accompanied by Bismarck, Tirpitz, Hindenurg and Ludendorff, what a show! But propably a hypotethical European war outcome can really be implied in WiTP. It ain´t to unrealistic, in fact it is even more realistc, than what happened in reality :rolleyes:
