There's a UK magazine called Air Enthusiast and the July edition has a great artilcle on B-17's fighting in 42 to 43 over New Guinea. Flying bombing missions to Rabaul, Buna and Gili Gili. It even comments that they strafed some shipping, at least once, with the ball turret gunner firing first. All the B-17's got peppered with holes, like over 100 holes counted in one plane alone! It's also a two part article with the next installment coming in August.

Of course to a real air enthusiast, the word “plane” represents a hand tool used by cabinet makers.

“Aircraft” is the correct terminology.

Even if it says holes let not forget that behind that skin with the holes would be all sorts of formers/hydrolics/spars/control cables/ etc etc. So even though we see photos of shot up bombers most of the time we arent told how much work was involved for the airframe fitter/armours/engineers etc.

Of course, a majority of aircraft never had major repairs done to the airframe and major avionics, most just being designated as "War Weary" quicker to become training aircraft, Headquarters/General's "hacks" or hangar queens.

Say what??? You're saying that fixed-wing aircraft and blimps are somehow different??? And here I thought those planes were crashing because of all the little holes letting the air out!

No no! The holes let the karma out and the aircraft feels despondent and settles to earth (or the sea).

I always thought it was the mojo that leaked out. Or is this the same as karma? :rolleyes:
