Issues with artillery supporting fire

A couple of things I've noticed lately.
1) Quite often, artillery just don't give supporting fire. They are in range and have ammunition, but not adjacent to the attacked unit and they have fired during their turn. Has something changed with some of the later patches, because I didn't see this before. Do they have to not fire in their own turn to give supporting fire now, or do they have to be adjacent to the unit they're supporting ?

2) At times, artillery will give supporting fire outside their normal firing range. I've seen this in my own units and the AI units.

Btw, I just got the 3 dlc's and have played a couple on '39 and the first on '41. I really like the move away from turn based vicory criteria.

IIRC, the arty must be adjacent to the friendly unit that is being attacked to provide support. I think it has always been that way.

I think I read that you only got full support if adjacent, and half support if not adjacent. I'm sure I've been attacked by artillery not adjacent to the enemy units I attacked, and the same when enemies attack my forces.

In PzC artillery gives defensive fire only to units next to it.

Combat happens on defender's hex, and all artillery units have range at least 1, so they are always in range to provide defensive fire to adjacent units.

Ok, I guess that explains it. I must be the mixing rules with some other game regarding the first part.

PG2 certainly had support fire across several hexes (with reduced effect).
