Collisions...

Is it true that ships in REP or TF TF seem more likley to collide in surface actions - I thought I would mention this as I have had a series of collisions in these circumstances and an opponent in another game lost a US DD to a collsion between two DD when they were in a surface fight mixed in with CA/CL AP AK etc.
Do ships collide just when moving or just in surface actions?
Do commanders / ship exp play a role?
The biggest ship I have lost to a collision has been one of the old Jap CL , that was in a T convoy attacked by US ships at PM ( which I own) . It got dispanded into port at PM but still sank.

Both, I think the biggest factors are size of TF and restricted waters. I have had all types of ships collide. Massive invasions where all the ships are in one hex or one TF will give you lots of collisions.
I was moving an ARD in the Pacific and got the message that the tow rope parted. Suffered about 10 sys and 10 flotation.

Mine seem to happen more in cargo/transport but I normally have 25+ ships in those so chances are probably based on #of ships. Though I've had DD's collide in a 4 ship tf before.

Collisions at sea are based on the following factors.
- number of ships in the TF, the more ships in the TF the increased chance of a collision occuring
- the speed of the TF, at maximum speed the chance of a collision occuring increase
- what the TF is doing, a TF engaged in combat is more likely to see a collision than if it is trundling along sedately carrying cargo from A to B
- random luck
When a collision does occur, the smaller ship of the two involved in the collision usually comes off worse.

thx Alfred, i agree w/ your analysis.
(also my thanks for your Ship Repair 101 post, that was awesome!)
my take is that AE introduces these events far less often than was actually the case, & also should have included random events such as running aground, blundering into your own minefield, & the occasional ammo-dump or magazine explosion (Mutsu).
my own personal moan is when a fully-loaded AO or TK goes ka-boom, w/ no explanation! it'd be nice to know if this was a random event, or if (more likely) it got tagged by a patrol-bomber.

These things can happen, though, they're just situational so the conditions won't necessarily arise - larger minefields increase the risk of friendly ships hitting them as well as enemy ships, reef groundings only tend to happen around actual reefs etc.

I just had the Adelaide blow up due to a magazine explosion as a result of a Torp hit from a Betty - strange that a Mag explosion is linked to a Torp hit but what the heck - anything can happen. More of this is better - frustrating when it happens but better.

Here are two Aden class xAKs that were in a TF running resources from areas in the area of the Home Islands in a TF of about a dozen with some escorting PBs. From the images, it should be obvious which one ran into which.
Some details have been redacted to protect operational security.
It happened in a port hex with repair capacity, one will be out a week or so, the other a month or so.
